AWS was a notable growth contributor. CEO Andy Jassy said, “AWS is booming, growing 36.7% year-over-year in Q2—our fastest growth in 18 quarters—and our AI and Chips businesses each eclipsed run rates of more than $25 billion.” The 36.7% in his statement is the more precise version of the rounded 37% reported for AWS sales growth. “Run rate” is not the same as quarterly revenue: the statement describes an annualized pace for the AI and chip businesses, not their Q2 sales totals. The quote appears in Amazon’s July 30 results release.
How should investors interpret Amazon’s earnings?
Amazon reported net income of $62.6 billion and diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $5.75. Those are reported GAAP figures, and the quarter included a large non-operating gain. That matters because net income and EPS can include items outside the operating performance of Amazon’s businesses; the headline figures therefore are not directly interchangeable with analyst estimates that use adjusted EPS.

After-hours trading is a separate period from the regular market session, so a quoted move depends on when it was measured. A subsequent regular-session return, or a later share price, is a different comparison and should be reported with its own date and timeframe. The initial reaction indicates how investors responded at that moment; it does not establish where the shares will trade later.
What else shaped the market reaction?
Investors were also weighing Amazon’s increased 2026 capital-spending outlook and its guidance for the third quarter. Spending plans can affect expectations about future capacity and growth, while also raising questions about costs and returns. The company’s own release provides its guidance and cautions that forward-looking statements involve substantial uncertainty. A quarterly earnings beat or one after-hours move cannot resolve those uncertainties or guarantee future performance.
