Steve Ballmer’s 2018 question about traffic around Amazon’s Seattle headquarters raised a practical issue for the SuperSonics’ possible return: getting fans to the arena. Seattle’s prospects have since advanced beyond speculation. On March 25, 2026, the NBA approved exploring expansion to Seattle and Las Vegas—but it has not awarded Seattle a team or announced a return date.
What Steve Ballmer asked about Amazon and KeyArena
In 2018, Ballmer wondered how traffic around Amazon’s headquarters had changed the trip to KeyArena, where he had held Sonics season tickets for 20 years. GeekWire quoted him asking: “One of the great queries I have is, with all the traffic around Amazon headquarters, how much more tricky would it be to get to KeyArena now than it was when I had season tickets to the Sonics for 20 years?” GeekWire’s 2018 report placed the remark in a broader conversation about Seattle’s chances of getting an NBA team.
It was a question about access and a changing city, not an announcement that Ballmer intended to buy a team. Nor does the comment establish that traffic around Amazon would decide whether the NBA expands to Seattle.
Where Seattle’s NBA expansion prospects stand
On March 25, 2026, the NBA Board of Governors approved exploring expansion to Seattle and Las Vegas. The league said it had engaged PJT Partners to advise on prospective markets, ownership groups, arena infrastructure and broader economic implications. The announcement describes an evaluation process—not franchise awards or selected owners. The NBA’s announcement names the two markets but does not rank them or say which, if either, will receive a team.

Seattle had an NBA team from 1967 through 2008, and the SuperSonics won the 1979 championship, according to the Associated Press. The governors’ vote is a step toward potential expansion, not confirmation that the Sonics are returning. The AP’s March 25, 2026 report provides that franchise history and describes the vote as an exploratory step.
Climate Pledge Arena and Seattle’s readiness case
Seattle’s City Council affirmed the city’s readiness for an NBA team in 2026 and declared Climate Pledge Arena ready. In Resolution 32198, the council describes the venue as a privately funded modernization of the former KeyArena, designed to host top-level professional basketball. Those are the city’s claims in support of its bid; they are not an NBA finding or an expansion award. Read Seattle City Council Resolution 32198.

Seattle’s announcement presents the city’s position; the NBA has separately said arena infrastructure is one of the factors its adviser will evaluate.

The league has identified four evaluation dimensions: prospective markets, ownership groups, arena infrastructure and broader economic implications. The available announcements do not provide comparable market data, final ownership bids or a decision timetable, so they do not support a claim that Seattle has won out over Las Vegas.

For fans, Ballmer’s traffic question remains a useful reminder that a team’s prospects involve more than a venue: access is part of the city experience. But the NBA’s stated process is broader, and Seattle’s civic assertion that its arena is ready does not substitute for the league’s evaluation.
