Amazon’s Kindle Vella service is closed. Its shutdown took effect on February 26, 2025: stories and episodes can no longer be purchased, although readers who bought episodes before closure can still read them in free Kindle apps. Amazon said Vella “didn’t catch on as we’d hoped.”
When did Kindle Vella close?
Amazon announced the wind-down in October 2024. Its Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) FAQ confirms that the service ended effective February 26, 2025, when episodes stopped being available for purchase on Amazon.com. The service is not awaiting a relaunch or still accepting new purchases.

What was Kindle Vella?
Amazon launched Kindle Vella in the United States on July 13, 2021 as a mobile-first serial-reading service, available through the Kindle iOS app and Amazon.com. Authors released stories in installments rather than publishing a complete book at once.
- At launch, each episode could be 600 to 5,000 words.
- The first three episodes of a story were free; readers used purchased Tokens to unlock later episodes.
- Launch features included story tags, follows and release notifications, thumbs-up reactions, weekly favorites, author notes, and sharing.
These are launch-era details, not current purchase options. Amazon’s launch announcement describes the original format and availability: Amazon’s Kindle Vella launch announcement.

Can readers still access episodes they bought?
Yes. Amazon says customers who purchased episodes before closure can continue reading them in the free Kindle apps for Fire tablets, iOS, and Android. Vella itself no longer sells stories or episodes. Amazon’s FAQ gives the current access information: Kindle Vella Update FAQ.
What happened to authors’ stories and payments?
Republishing stories
Amazon encourages former Vella authors to republish their stories as eBooks. Its KDP FAQ points authors to Kindle Create, an eBook manuscript-formatting guide, and KDP preparation resources for eBook and print books. The closure does not itself mean a story has been converted or republished; authors must prepare and publish a separate edition through KDP.

Reports and payment records
The Kindle Vella Dashboard in KDP Reports is no longer available. Amazon says payment information remains in the Payments statement. For the historical token wind-down, GeekWire reported that balances remaining at closure would be credited as Amazon gift cards; Amazon’s FAQ confirms the final closure date and continued access to payment information.
