Amazon’s proposed settlement in a U.S. returns-and-refunds lawsuit would create a $309.5 million fund for eligible consumers, but it is not final and payments are not guaranteed. Some eligible people are slated to receive payments automatically; others must submit a claim by December 1, 2026. The final approval hearing is scheduled for March 16, 2027.

What is the Amazon returns settlement about?

The case, In re: Amazon Return Policy Litigation, No. 2:23-cv-01372-JNW, is before the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. It concerns allegations that Amazon mishandled certain returns and refunds, including delayed or incorrect refunds and charges made after a customer returned a product. Amazon denies the allegations. The settlement site says the court has made no finding that Amazon engaged in wrongdoing or is liable.

This is the returns-policy case, not the separate settlement concerning Amazon Prime enrollment. The proposed agreement resolves claims without a finding of liability.

How much is the settlement worth?

The filed agreement provides for a $309.5 million non-reversionary common fund, often rounded in headlines to $309 million. It calls for $5 million to be funded following preliminary approval and the remaining $304.5 million after the settlement’s effective date. The agreement allocates 92.7% of the net fund to Subclass A and 7.3% to Subclass B; those percentages are allocations, not promised individual payment amounts. The official settlement site says payments will be made only if the court approves the settlement and it becomes final.

  • Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
  • Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
  • No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.

The agreement also reports separate refund efforts: Amazon had issued approximately $570 million in refunds and had approximately $34 million in unpaid refunds as of December 1, 2025. Those figures are not additional payments from the $309.5 million settlement fund, and the agreement notes overlap among the categories of returns involved.

Who may be eligible?

The agreement’s proposed class covers people who initiated a return or requested a refund for a physical product bought through Amazon.com and recorded as received in the United States, beginning September 5, 2017. The person must also have experienced one of the specified problems: no refund when one was due, an untimely or incorrect refund, or a refund followed by an allegedly incorrect charge for the returned product. The class period ends based on when class data was prepared, so the start date alone does not establish eligibility.

ClassAction.org reported September 30, 2026 that the public eligibility window ended February 12, 2026 and that preliminary approval occurred August 18, 2026. That is secondary reporting; the agreement ties the class-period endpoint to class-data preparation. Check your official settlement notice and the official site rather than deciding from a general description of your return issue.

Do you need to file a claim?

It depends on which subclass the settlement notice assigns you to. The agreement’s allocation and the official site describe two different tracks:

What happens next, and when could payments arrive?

As of the status described on the official settlement site, the agreement is proposed and awaits a final approval hearing. No payment date or guaranteed payment is established: the site says no settlement payments will be provided unless the court approves the agreement and it becomes final. The sources cited here do not establish a specific distribution schedule after final approval.

What changes to Amazon’s refund process are included?

The agreement describes process measures intended to monitor returns and address refunds that fail or stall. These include regular monitoring against timelines in Amazon’s Return Policy, technical review and troubleshooting of failed refunds or erroneous retrocharges, and automatic reprocessing of approved refunds that remain incomplete after 30 days because of payment-processing issues. If automated reprocessing does not work, the agreement provides for manual reprocessing. The measures are to continue for 18 months after the settlement’s effective date.
