On February 7, 2024, Disney announced a planned multiyear collaboration with Epic Games and a $1.5 billion investment for an equity stake in the company. CEO Bob Iger described the proposed experience as a Disney world connected to Fortnite, where people could play, watch, create, interact with characters and stories, and potentially shop. He presented the stake as a way to deepen the partnership while keeping Disney’s risk limited. The announcement did not give a launch date, and its stated closing conditions mean the announcement alone does not establish whether the investment later closed.

What Disney and Epic announced

Disney and Epic Games said they would develop an open, persistent, social games and entertainment universe connected to Fortnite. The project was to be powered by Unreal Engine and bring stories and experiences from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, and other Disney properties into the experience. The companies described possible activities including playing, watching, shopping, engaging with characters and stories, creating experiences, and sharing content with other users. These were elements of the announced plan, not a list of features shown to be available.

Disney also announced it would invest $1.5 billion to acquire an equity stake in Epic. The announcement said the transaction was subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals; it did not itself confirm a later closing. Epic described Fortnite as having more than 100 million active players and creators in its February 7, 2024 announcement. That is an announcement-era figure, not a current user count, and the cited passage does not provide a measurement window or methodology. Epic’s announcement

How Iger imagined the experience

In prepared remarks for Disney’s Q1 FY24 earnings call, Iger called the project “Disney’s biggest entry into the world of games.” He said it would integrate Disney storytelling into Fortnite and let consumers play, watch, create, and shop for digital and physical goods. He linked the opportunity to meeting younger audiences in places where they already spend time. Disney’s prepared earnings-call remarks

  • After little Lilo Pelekai adopts the alien known as Experiment 626, she renames him Stitch and does her best to train her new “puppy” with a little help from Elvis Presley.
  • Though Stitch may be cute and fluffy on the outside, he’s constantly battling his destructive impulses. He was designed by an evil genius to be a monster, after all.
  • Pretending to be a kaiju, Stitch rampages through the tiny cityscape while gobbling up cars and leveling paper buildings along the way.
  • Based on the treasured Disney animated film Lilo and Stitch, the Stitch X San Francisco Q-Fig Max Elite will remind Disney fans why they fell in love with this adorable little mayhem machine.
  • Sometimes we all have to blow off a little steam, but with Stitch in your Q-Fig collection you’re sure to smile and remember that ohana means family - no matter what.

A Disney world alongside Fortnite

Answering analyst Michael Morris’s question about why Disney was investing, what the product might look like, and when it could arrive, Iger described a “gigantic Disney World a la Fortnite” that could live next to Fortnite and be interconnected with it. His concept included playing games made by Disney, making games, watching, and interacting. He also raised shopping as a possibility. This was a vision of the proposed product, not confirmation that those activities had launched or that every possibility would be included.

Potential content and shopping

Iger suggested short-form video or content distribution as possible extensions, alongside shopping. The comments did not establish these as committed features. The prepared remarks referred to shopping for both digital and physical goods, but the announcement did not identify specific goods or a way to purchase them.

At a later Morgan Stanley conference, Iger characterized the planned experience as “a deep, rich, fully immersive, engaging experience for consumers” and said it could extend Disney intellectual property into another medium. Disney’s recap of those remarks described an ambition, not a launch or a report of realized results. Disney’s Morgan Stanley conference recap

Why Iger said Disney wanted an equity stake

Iger said licensing had been Disney’s most successful approach to video games, and he noted that Disney already knew Epic through Fortnite collaborations. He framed the new arrangement as a way to participate more directly in building an interconnected Disney experience rather than relying only on licensing existing Disney properties for games.

He described the $1.5 billion stake as “skin in the game”: in his account, having an investment would strengthen the partnership while they built a world without creating too much risk for Disney. That is Iger’s stated rationale, not independent evidence about expected returns, the investment’s eventual performance, or the company’s actual risk exposure. Disney’s earnings-call transcript

What the announcement did—and did not—establish

  • Announced: A $1.5 billion investment for an equity stake in Epic, alongside a multiyear Disney–Epic project.
  • Planned: A Fortnite-connected, Unreal Engine-powered social games and entertainment universe drawing on Disney properties.
  • Not specified in the cited announcement: A launch date.
  • Not established by the announcement: Whether the investment ultimately closed, whether the universe launched, or what its final features and commercial results would be.

For a reader assessing the business significance, the distinction matters: the $1.5 billion figure was a proposed investment announced alongside a project, while Iger’s descriptions of the future experience were plans and possibilities. The cited announcement and remarks do not establish a realized product or financial outcome.
