Amazon closed its smaller Amazon Fresh store at 610 E. Pike St. in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood in April 2024, saying it wanted to focus on larger redesigned stores. That was the company’s explanation at the time—not its current physical-grocery plan: in January 2026, Amazon announced it would close its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores, converting various locations into Whole Foods Market stores.
Why did the Capitol Hill Amazon Fresh store close?
Amazon confirmed on April 3, 2024, that the store at 610 E. Pike St. would close after that Sunday. The location had opened in February 2020 as the first Amazon Go Grocery store and later operated as Amazon Fresh. GeekWire reported that Amazon spokesperson Jessica Martin described the closure as a decision to focus selectively on opening new Fresh stores after positive customer feedback on a redesigned format.
At the time, Amazon was highlighting redesigned, full-sized Fresh stores in Chicago and Southern California. Supermarket News reported that Amazon said those stores featured expanded selection, low prices and checkout options including Dash Cart, and that the redesigns were producing higher customer-satisfaction scores and improved sales. Those results were company-reported claims, not independent findings.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy also described the early results as promising on the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call, while saying the company needed more time to assess them before deciding how quickly and by what means to expand. That assessment described Amazon’s position then; it did not establish that the strategy would continue.

Is Amazon still expanding larger Amazon Fresh stores?
No. The 2024 explanation was superseded by a broader change in January 2026. Amazon said it had not yet developed a sufficiently distinctive customer experience and an economic model that could support large-scale expansion of its Amazon-branded physical grocery formats. It announced plans to close its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores and convert various locations into Whole Foods Market stores. Amazon’s announcement, updated May 12, 2026, says Amazon Fresh online shopping remained available in areas served.
The chronology resolves the apparent contradiction: in April 2024, Amazon cited selective expansion of a redesigned Fresh format as its reason for closing this smaller Seattle location; in January 2026, it announced a retreat from Amazon-branded Fresh and Go physical stores more broadly.

What is Amazon prioritizing in grocery now?
Whole Foods Market
Amazon said Whole Foods Market sales had grown by more than 40% since its 2017 acquisition and that the chain had expanded to more than 550 locations. The company said it planned to open more than 100 additional Whole Foods stores over the next few years. These figures and plans come from Amazon’s own announcement, not an independent performance assessment.
Online grocery and delivery
Amazon’s 2026 update described continued investment in grocery delivery, including Amazon Fresh online shopping in areas it serves. The update does not mean Amazon Fresh physical stores remain open as a growth format.

Amazon’s stated reason for closing the Capitol Hill location was its selective focus on larger redesigned Fresh stores, not a specific checkout technology. Checkout changes were part of the broader context: GeekWire reported in April 2024 that Amazon was removing Just Walk Out from existing large-format Fresh stores and planned to use Dash Carts there instead.

The company’s technology explainer presents those as different shopping use cases; its adoption and satisfaction measures are Amazon-reported. Amazon’s explainer does not establish checkout technology as the cause of the Capitol Hill closure.
