Amazon announced in January 2026 that it would close its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical grocery stores and concentrate investment on online grocery delivery and Whole Foods Market. Some former locations are planned to become Whole Foods stores, but Amazon has not said every closed store will be converted. Amazon says Fresh ordering continues online in areas where the service is available.
Why are Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh stores closing?
Amazon said its branded physical grocery stores had shown encouraging signs but had not produced “a truly distinctive customer experience with the right economic model needed for large-scale expansion.” That is the company’s stated rationale, not an independently established finding about store profitability or a disclosure of specific financial losses. Amazon’s grocery strategy announcement was updated May 12, 2026.
The Associated Press reported on January 27, 2026, that most locations were expected to close within days, while California locations would remain open longer to meet state requirements. The reporting does not provide a complete, current list of store closures or conversions. The Associated Press report covers the announcement and timing.
What is Amazon doing instead?
Expanding grocery delivery and Whole Foods
Amazon says it plans to expand online grocery delivery and Whole Foods Market. In its May 12, 2026 update, the company said Whole Foods had more than 550 locations and that it planned to open more than 100 additional stores over the next few years. Those openings are a plan, not a completed count or a guarantee of a particular schedule.

Amazon also said it would expand same-day delivery of fresh groceries to more communities in 2026. It describes eligible orders as including produce, dairy, meat, baked goods, and frozen foods alongside other Amazon.com items. The company reported that perishable grocery sales through its Same-Day service had grown 40 times since January 2025; that is Amazon’s own comparison, not an independently audited measure. Amazon’s announcement also says its grocery delivery service reached more than 5,000 U.S. cities and towns as of the update.
Testing other formats
Amazon says it is testing Amazon Now, a service intended to deliver thousands of essential items, including fresh food, in about 30 minutes or less in several cities. The company also described testing Amazon Grocery alongside a Whole Foods Market in Chicago, a “store within a store” in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, and exploring a supercenter concept. These are tests or explorations, not evidence that the formats are broadly available.

Can you still order Amazon Fresh online?
Yes, according to Amazon, customers can continue to shop Amazon Fresh online in areas where it is available. Its consumer announcement says Amazon grocery delivery and free pickup are offered to customers in U.S. cities and towns where Amazon Fresh is available to Prime members. Availability, delivery windows, fees, and pickup options depend on the address. Amazon also lists local grocery and specialty retailers on Amazon.com, including Bristol Farms, Cardenas Markets, Pet Food Express, Weis Markets, and Save Mart; selection varies by location. Amazon’s grocery delivery and pickup announcement describes these services.
Amazon said Whole Foods delivery and free pickup would soon expand to non-Prime customers. The announcement described a planned rollout targeting two-hour delivery access in more than 3,500 U.S. cities and towns once fully launched across Whole Foods locations. Treat that number as the scope of the announced plan, not a guarantee that service is live at a particular address. Check the applicable listing or checkout screen for current eligibility, fees, delivery timing, and pickup.

What happens to Just Walk Out shopping?
Amazon says the Go closures do not mean it is discontinuing Just Walk Out technology. The company described Go stores as “innovation hubs” for the technology and reported that it operated in more than 360 third-party locations across five countries and in more than 40 North American fulfillment-center breakrooms as of May 2026. These adoption figures are reported by Amazon.
In an earlier explainer, Amazon characterized Just Walk Out as suited to quick trips for a smaller number of items and Dash Cart as its smart-cart approach for larger grocery trips. Those descriptions explain the technologies, not the current status of any particular store. Amazon’s technology explainer includes a January 27, 2026 update about the store closures.

How to check what replaces a store near you
Amazon has said some, but not all, closed Go and Fresh locations would become Whole Foods Market stores. The announcements cited here do not provide a complete live directory of closures and conversions, so a former Amazon store’s future use cannot be inferred from the nationwide strategy alone.
- Look up the specific store in Amazon’s current store listings or on the relevant grocery service page.
- Enter your delivery address on Amazon to see which services and retailers serve it, along with available delivery windows and pickup options.
- For an announced or rumored conversion, check the location’s current listing before making a trip; plans may not mean a store is open yet.
For a practical comparison, check the same address for availability, delivery or pickup timing, fees, order minimums, and the retailer’s selection. The available announcements do not establish a universally cheapest or best alternative.
