Amazon’s Prime Try Before You Buy benefit ended for U.S. customers after January 31, 2025. Amazon said the program reached a limited number of items and customers were increasingly using its digital fit tools. The company did not explicitly say it was ending the service to cut costs.
Is Amazon Try Before You Buy gone?
Yes. The U.S. benefit is discontinued. The Associated Press reported that January 31, 2025, was the final day eligible customers could place an order using it (Associated Press, January 13, 2025).
How Prime Try Before You Buy worked
Prime members could select up to six eligible apparel items, have them delivered, and try them at home. They had seven days after delivery to return unwanted items without being charged for those items. The program therefore differed from an ordinary purchase: shoppers could assess the clothing before paying for what they kept.
The service grew out of Prime Wardrobe, which Amazon began testing in 2017. At its 2018 UK launch, Amazon described a different market’s terms: orders of three to eight eligible items, a seven-day decision period, and free returns using a resealable bag and prepaid label. Those launch details are historical, not current UK terms (Amazon UK Press Center, October 30, 2018).

Why did Amazon end it?
Amazon’s explanation, reported by the Associated Press, was that Try Before You Buy had not scaled to many items while customers were increasingly using the company’s AI-powered fit features. The spokesperson cited virtual try-on, personalized size recommendations, review highlights, and improved size charts. That is the company’s stated rationale; it does not establish that the digital tools are a full substitute for trying clothes on.
Retail analyst Neil Saunders offered a separate interpretation in Retail Dive’s January 13, 2025 report: he said the program added operational complexity and could encourage returns. That is analyst commentary, not a reason Amazon itself gave. The available reporting does not establish that Amazon explicitly ended the benefit to cut costs.

Can I still return clothes to Amazon?
Amazon said apparel customers would continue to have free returns after the trial program ended. That does not restore the old arrangement: with an ordinary purchase, payment is not deferred while you try the item. Return eligibility, deadlines, and any conditions can vary by item, so check the specific product’s return terms before ordering.
What Amazon’s fit tools can—and cannot—tell you
Amazon’s digital features may help shoppers judge sizing before ordering. Amazon Europe has described personalized size recommendations and review filters by height and weight. These can provide useful context, but they do not physically test how a garment fits you.

Amazon Europe also reported that its sizing features were associated with a more than 17% reduction in fit-related fashion returns among European customers over two years. The publication year for that page is not established here. This is a company-reported European figure—not a U.S. result, a current annual estimate, or proof that the tools made the U.S. trial unnecessary (About Amazon Europe).

The closure date and reporting cited above concern U.S. customers. Amazon’s older Europe article listed the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, and France as markets where Prime Try Before You Buy was available at the time, but it predates the U.S. closure and does not establish present availability there. Current post-closure status in the UK and EU is not established by these sources, so do not assume either that the service ended worldwide or that it remains available in those markets.

What to check before buying apparel
- Whether payment is due when you place the order; standard returns are not a no-upfront-payment trial.
- The item’s return deadline and eligibility conditions.
- Whether return shipping is free for that specific item.
- Size charts, fit recommendations, and relevant reviews, while recognizing that they cannot guarantee how a garment will fit you.
