Jamsetji Tata: Powerful Learnings for Corporate Success, by Harish Bhat and R Gopalakrishnan, is the book behind Scroll.in’s 29 July 2024 excerpt. The authors connect Jamsetji Tata’s industrial ventures with a broader lesson about developing Indian managerial talent: building capable leaders takes sustained work and is a responsibility shared by leaders, not just HR.

Which book is the excerpt from?

Scroll.in published the excerpt with permission from Penguin India. It comes from Jamsetji Tata: Powerful Learnings for Corporate Success, written by Harish Bhat and R Gopalakrishnan. The excerpt presents the authors’ interpretation of Tata’s industrial vision and the continuing challenge of talent development; it is not a comprehensive history or an independent historical study.

How does the excerpt connect Tata’s industries with local talent?

The authors place Jamsetji Tata’s ventures in a wider account of Indian industrial activity. They say that by the 1930s his textile, steel and hydropower enterprises were operating, and frame industrial growth as requiring both technical assistance and the development of local manpower and managerial talent.

That is the excerpt’s framing of the relationship between industry and talent: homegrown enterprises need people able to build and lead them. The passage should be read as the authors’ account, rather than as a separately verified conclusion about all Indian businesses or historical conditions.

What does the book argue about developing leaders?

Bhat and Gopalakrishnan present leadership development as gradual and iterative, rather than something that can be completed through a quick fix. They write: “Talent development is a core responsibility of all leaders.” In their view, managers should take an active role in identifying and preparing people for greater responsibility instead of leaving that work exclusively to HR.

The excerpt also reports that leaders and CEOs from L&T, HDFC, Kotak, Marico, TCS and Biocon said they spent between 25 per cent and 40 per cent of their time reflecting, thinking and planning about management talent. The authors attribute these responses to a research project called “Shapers of Business Institutions.” The excerpt does not give the study’s year, methodology or original report, so the figure is best understood as the authors’ account of those leaders’ responses—not a general benchmark for executives.

The authors sum up their view this way: “Talent building represents the infinite game and has no quick-fix solutions.” In context, the point is that developing people requires continuing attention rather than a one-off initiative.
