Gerber Kawasaki Wealth and Investment Management sold more than 26,000 Tesla shares in the first quarter of 2025, a little over 10% of its stake, according to Business Insider. That was a partial reduction—not a reported sale of every share. Ross Gerber’s warnings of a steep decline were forecasts, not evidence that Tesla had already collapsed.

What did Gerber’s firm sell?

Business Insider reported that a Q1 2025 filing showed Gerber Kawasaki Wealth and Investment Management sold more than 26,000 Tesla shares, representing a little over 10% of the firm’s stake. The report did not establish when during the quarter the sales took place. The reported seller was Gerber Kawasaki, the firm associated with investor Ross Gerber—not Gerber personally liquidating his entire position. Business Insider’s May 2025 report also said the firm had sold more than 204,000 Tesla shares over the preceding two years; that cumulative figure is separate from the Q1 sale.

What did Gerber mean by a possible “collapse”?

In February 2025, Gerber told Business Insider that Tesla’s stock could drop by as much as 50% if things did not work out for the company that year. That was a conditional prediction about the stock’s value, not a claim that a 50% decline had already happened or was certain. The February report described concerns about Tesla’s valuation, vehicle sales, Full Self-Driving capability and Elon Musk’s focus.

In May, Gerber said the next six months would be “make or break” and tied his concern to whether Tesla could establish a credible Robotaxi business. He also said, “We certainly haven’t changed our view where we would start adding it again.” Those remarks conveyed his firm’s stance at the time; they do not establish its current holdings or later trading decisions. Business Insider reported the May comments.

1/32 Model x Metal Die Casting Toy Car,Pull Back Car with Sound and Lights
  • Boy's model toy car: The body is made of alloy material, with exquisite paint craftsmanship and good durability.
  • Realistic alloy model car: The 1:32 interior decoration is realistic, with six doors that can be opened. The steering wheel and seats have simulated designs.
  • Toy car with lights and music: Opening the car door can light up the lights and simulate the sound of an engine starting. It's a toy car that boys like.
  • Companion to Decoration and Cake Decorations: It plays a great decorative role on display cabinets at home and is a great decoration for boys' birthday cake parties.
  • Gift selection for toy cars for boys aged 3-12: This gift is suitable for children aged 3 and above and is a collectible for car enthusiasts.

Why was Gerber bearish?

Gerber’s stated case centered on several risks he believed could undermine Tesla’s prospects. These are his assessments, not independently established findings that the company is bound to fail.

  • Robotaxi execution: He questioned whether Tesla could convince investors that a real, credible Robotaxi business would arrive.
  • Vehicle demand: He raised concerns about vehicle sales and demand.
  • Autonomy: His February critique included doubts about Full Self-Driving capability.
  • Leadership and brand: He pointed to Musk’s focus and impact on Tesla.
  • Valuation: He argued that the stock was vulnerable if the company’s expectations were not met.

The central uncertainty is whether Tesla can deliver enough growth and execution to justify expectations embedded in its valuation. A bullish investor might weigh demand, autonomy, leadership and valuation differently; the February and May reports document Gerber’s position, but do not provide an independent bullish counter-analysis.

Did the reported sale prove a total exit or a collapse?

No. The reported Q1 transaction was a reduction of a little over one-tenth of Gerber Kawasaki’s Tesla stake, not a reported liquidation. And neither the sale nor Gerber’s forecast proves that Tesla’s business or stock has collapsed. Futurism’s May 19, 2025 headline used the phrase “dumped his stock,” while the underlying reporting quantified a partial sale. Futurism’s article should be read with that distinction in mind.

The available reports describe events and opinions from February and May 2025. They do not establish Tesla’s current share price, Gerber Kawasaki’s present holdings, subsequent Robotaxi performance, or whether Gerber’s forecast came true.
