AGCO announced an agreement on July 26, 2017, to acquire Precision Planting LLC’s equipment business from The Climate Corporation, then a Monsanto Company subsidiary. AGCO later confirmed the purchase closed on September 5, 2017. The deal covered Precision Planting’s equipment business—not all of The Climate Corporation or its Climate FieldView platform.

What AGCO agreed to acquire

The announced transaction was for the Precision Planting LLC equipment business. Precision Planting makes technology that can upgrade existing farm equipment rather than requiring farmers to replace an entire machine. AGCO’s January 2024 description lists products for planters, air seeders, drills, sprayers, liquid and dry fertilizer applicators, and combines. AGCO’s 2024 product and facility announcement describes those equipment categories.

The scope matters: AGCO did not announce that it was buying The Climate Corporation or FieldView. The seller was described in the 2017 announcement as a Monsanto Company subsidiary.

When the deal was announced and completed

AGCO and The Climate Corporation announced a definitive agreement on July 26, 2017. The announcement said the transaction was subject to regulatory approvals, but did not publish a closing date. AGCO subsequently reported that the purchase had closed on September 5, 2017. AGCO’s announcement of the agreement and its September 5 closing statement document the two milestones.

What the companies disclosed about the financial terms

The July 2017 announcement said, “The terms of the agreement were not disclosed.” It therefore does not establish the purchase price, financing, expected synergies, or a measured financial return from the acquisition. No transaction value should be inferred from the fact that the deal closed.

What happened to FieldView connectivity

At the time of the agreement announcement, The Climate Corporation said Climate FieldView would “retain connectivity with Precision Planting’s 20/20 SeedSense monitor.” That statement described the planned connection at announcement time; it does not establish present-day compatibility, service terms, or support for any particular equipment configuration.

How Precision Planting fits AGCO’s portfolio now

AGCO later introduced PTx as its precision-ag brand, combining Precision Planting and PTx Trimble. AGCO said the Trimble joint-venture transaction was completed on April 1, 2024. Its April 2024 PTx launch announcement and 2025 Form 10-K provide that later portfolio context and recount the 2017 purchase. PTx is a subsequent brand structure; it was not the name used for the acquisition when it was announced in 2017.

Why AGCO said it wanted the business

AGCO’s stated rationale was to strengthen its position in planting technology and its role as a full-line partner for professional farmers. Then-CEO Martin Richenhagen said the acquisition would “solidify AGCO as one of the global leaders in planting technology.” That was an executive’s characterization of the strategic aim, not a disclosed or independently measured outcome.
