Seattle’s Maritime Innovation Center is a planned Port of Seattle project at Fishermen’s Terminal, designed to give maritime and ocean-focused startups space and support to develop their businesses. The Port’s current schedule lists the renovated facility as “Open for use” in Q2 2027, while Washington Maritime Blue says it expects to open in late 2026; the published dates differ.

What is Seattle’s Maritime Innovation Center?

The Maritime Innovation Center, or MInC, is a Port of Seattle project to renovate the historic Ship Supply Building at Fishermen’s Terminal. The Port says the building dates to 1914 and plans to turn it into a 15,000-square-foot center for maritime businesses and entrepreneurs. Its planned uses include incubator and accelerator activity, fabrication, meetings, seminars, and classes. The Port’s project page describes the facility and its intended activities.

The project is intended to support companies developing maritime technologies, including BlueTech ventures, and to connect them with technical and financial support. The Port also says the building is designed to meet the Living Building Challenge, a sustainability standard. That is a design aim, not evidence that the center has already earned certification.

Where is it, and when is it expected to open?

The center is planned for the Ship Supply Building at Fishermen’s Terminal in Seattle. The Port’s milestone table lists “Open for use” in Q2 2027. Washington Maritime Blue’s Blue Hub page says the organizations will open the center in late 2026. Those official estimates differ, and neither page reconciles the dates; the Port’s milestone table is the clearest published schedule from the project owner. Who is behind the project?

The Port of Seattle is leading the building project and says it will operate the center with Washington Maritime Blue, a nonprofit maritime industry organization. The center is also planned to host the annual Innovation Accelerator Program, managed by the Port and Maritime Blue. The organizations’ broader partnership covers areas including decarbonization, ocean renewable energy, sustainable fishing, and marine conservation. Their December 2024 memorandum of understanding sets out a cooperation framework and an aim to advance maritime businesses and living-wage jobs. The Port’s announcement of the memorandum.

How could the center support startups and jobs?

The center is intended to bring entrepreneurs, investors, workers, and maritime industry participants together. Startup support, accelerator programming, fabrication access, and event and classroom space are meant to help companies develop ideas, address industry problems, and grow. The Port also identifies workforce development and career exploration as goals, including opportunities for local residents and young people to engage with participating startups.

These are intended benefits, not a forecast of a specific number of jobs. The Port has not published a named job-creation target for the new facility in the cited project materials, so claims about future employment should be treated as aims rather than guaranteed results.

What earlier accelerator figures do—and do not—show

Before the new facility is complete, the Innovation Accelerator has operated as a program. GeekWire reported in 2023 that Joshua Berger, Maritime Blue’s founder and president, said the program had run seven cohorts over four years and involved 51 marine-focused startups. Berger also attributed $400 million raised by participating startups and 400 jobs contributed to Washington to the accelerator activity. These are reported results associated with the earlier program, not measured impacts of the Maritime Innovation Center building. GeekWire’s 2023 report.

What funding has been approved?

On August 8, 2023, the Port of Seattle Commission approved $32.6 million for the project, including $5 million from the Washington State Department of Commerce, according to the Port’s announcement. That figure describes the approval reported on that date; it should not be read as a verified final project cost. Port of Seattle’s August 8, 2023 announcement.

The Port frames the center as part of a broader effort to support maritime businesses, technology development, and workforce opportunities. Whether those ambitions translate into jobs and durable company growth will depend on results measured after the facility and its programs are operating.
