If you want to end an individual Illinois Farm Bureau membership, contact the county Farm Bureau office that manages it and ask for the current cancellation process, effective date, and any dues or refund implications. The widely reported AFBF termination was about Illinois Farm Bureau’s membership in the national federation—not a process for individuals to cancel their own memberships.
How to cancel an individual Illinois Farm Bureau membership
- Find your county office. Use the Illinois Farm Bureau county directory to locate the office associated with your membership.
- Ask the office what it requires. Confirm the cancellation procedure, acceptable way to give notice, effective date, and whether any renewal, dues, or refund terms apply. The state membership page and county directory do not publish a universal individual cancellation form, notice period, or refund rule.
- Request written confirmation. If you make the request in writing, include enough identifying information for the office to locate your membership and ask it to confirm the cancellation and effective date. This is practical guidance, not a stated statewide requirement.
- Check connected benefits separately. Ask whether any discounts or programs depend on active membership. If you have a Country Financial policy, contact the insurer about that policy directly; the public membership information does not say what an individual cancellation would do to insurance coverage.
What the AFBF–Illinois Farm Bureau dispute was about
American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) is a national federation whose members include state Farm Bureau organizations. In November 2024, AFBF voted to terminate the Illinois Agricultural Association, publicly known as Illinois Farm Bureau, from the federation, initially setting December 20, 2024 as the effective date. Illinois Agricultural Association filed suit in McLean County. The organizational membership at issue was Illinois Farm Bureau’s relationship with AFBF—not an individual’s county or state membership.
Coverage described the dispute as arising after Country Financial changed a membership requirement for some policyholders, prompting disagreement over the change and its implications for dues and membership. See Successful Farming’s account of the AFBF vote and NPR Illinois’ September 2026 reporting.
How the dispute has developed
- November 2024: AFBF voted to terminate Illinois Farm Bureau’s federation membership, initially effective December 20. Illinois Agricultural Association challenged the decision in court.
- December 2024: NPR Illinois reported that AFBF backed off the December 20 deadline and would hold off until a month after the lawsuit was resolved. An agreed court order documented a procedural agreement while the case was underway.
- September 29, 2026: NPR Illinois reported that Country Financial had sued AFBF and sought to consolidate its action with the earlier case. That report indicates the broader dispute remained active; it does not establish the status of every claim or a final judgment.
Because the litigation is a separate organizational matter, an individual member should not assume that its outcome automatically cancels, continues, or changes their own membership or insurance policy. Ask the county office and any relevant provider about your specific account.

What Illinois Farm Bureau says membership includes
Illinois Farm Bureau’s membership page describes advocacy, information, development, and discounts among the benefits it offers. The organization says it serves more than 70,000 farmers, farmland owners, and agriculture industry professionals, and advertises more than 300,000 discounts; those are the organization’s own published descriptions, not independently audited counts. The page does not spell out what happens to a particular member’s benefits after cancellation, so confirm any benefit you use with the county office or provider.
