In its latest reviewed filing, the company said it was working with GE Aerospace and the FAA on a solution and certification plan. Boeing has not publicly named the affected component or confirmed that a final fix is complete. Its second-quarter 2026 reporting continued to forecast the first 777-9 delivery in 2027, but that remains a company expectation, not a guarantee.
What Boeing has confirmed about the engine issue
The affected engine is the GE Aerospace GE9X, which GE says was designed specifically for the Boeing 777X family. Boeing’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 says the potential durability issue was identified during a 2025 inspection and that Boeing is working with its supplier and the FAA on a solution and certification plan. The filing does not identify a failed part, explain a root cause, or say the corrective action is complete. Boeing’s filing and GE’s GE9X product information establish those points.
A February 5, 2026 report by Gulf Times attributed the concern to a seal inside the engine and said GE and Boeing were analyzing it. That component description is secondary reporting, not a detail confirmed in Boeing’s filing. Any discussion of a redesign or retrofit should likewise be treated as reported possibilities rather than an announced final plan.
What the issue means for the 777X program
The engine problem is one part of a larger aircraft certification effort. GE says the GE9X received FAA engine certification in September 2020, but certifying an engine is not the same as certifying the complete 777X aircraft. Boeing’s July 16, 2026 program update said the 777-9 had completed half of its planned certification testing and that additional Type Inspection Authorizations (TIAs) and certification deliverables remained. GE’s engine information and Boeing’s program update describe these separate milestones.

In the same July 2026 update, Boeing reported more than 4,800 flight hours and roughly 1,700 flights for the 777-9 test fleet. Those are Boeing-reported program totals, not evidence that the durability concern has been resolved. The company’s second-quarter results, dated July 28, 2026, reported TIA 4B approval and retained its expectation of a first 777-9 delivery in 2027. Boeing’s results and program update describe the status; neither makes the delivery date certain.
What Boeing expects for other 777X variants
Boeing’s second-quarter 2026 filing placed the 777-8 Freighter’s first delivery approximately two years after the 777-9 and said passenger 777-8 deliveries were not expected before 2030. These are Boeing’s stated expectations, not confirmed delivery dates. The filing’s variant outlook is the source for both estimates.

In the official Boeing and GE materials cited here, the following details are not stated:
- The exact engine component involved or the issue’s root cause.
- The final corrective design, or whether it is complete.
- When any change might be incorporated into production engines.
- Whether test or production engines will need retrofits, and how many.
- Whether the issue will change the aircraft’s certification work or delivery outlook.
Boeing’s filing establishes that work with its supplier and the FAA is continuing; it does not establish that the issue has been fixed or that a particular retrofit is planned.

How to read the latest status
Boeing senior vice president Mike Sinnett said in the July 16 update, “Certainty is more important than flow. Two years ago, the path forward wasn’t as clear as we wanted it to be. It is now.” The comment describes Boeing’s view of the certification path; it is not a technical statement about the GE9X durability issue. Boeing’s update also reports remaining certification milestones, so the statement should not be read as a claim that certification is finished.
