Remitly announced an $85 million equity financing on July 29, 2020, led by PayU. Contemporary reports said the round valued the Seattle-based digital remittance company at $1.5 billion, making it a unicorn by the valuation then reported. That figure describes the 2020 financing—not Remitly’s current valuation.

What Remitly announced in July 2020

Remitly said it had raised $85 million in equity financing. GeekWire reported the announcement and the $1.5 billion valuation on July 29, 2020. TechCrunch also reported the amount and valuation, describing the financing as an upround from the company’s Series E the previous year.

A valuation reported alongside a private funding round is a snapshot associated with that transaction. It is not a public share price or a measure of what Remitly is worth today.

Who invested in the round

TechCrunch identified PayU as the lead investor. It reported participation from DN Capital, Generation Investment Management, Owl Rock Capital, Princeville, Stripes, Threshold Ventures, and Top Tier. The round was equity financing; the coverage does not establish that each investor contributed the same amount.

Why the company attracted attention

Remitly’s core proposition was to let customers send money across borders digitally, using a mobile service rather than making an in-person trip to a money-transfer shop. GeekWire described the company as a Seattle digital remittance startup helping people send and receive money internationally. The pandemic-era context made a remote service especially salient, but the financing reports do not establish that COVID-19 alone caused the round or the company’s growth.

In its 2020 interview with TechCrunch, co-founder and CEO Matt Oppenheimer said, “We aren’t seeing that downturn in remittances,” reflecting the company’s view of demand at the time. TechCrunch reported that Remitly operated in 17 send-from markets and 57 send-to countries, and quoted Oppenheimer saying customer growth had risen 200% year over year. That 200% figure was his reported statement, not an independently verified or audited measure.

How Remitly’s business looks in later disclosures

The 2020 round should be kept separate from Remitly’s later scale. The company’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 says Remitly is headquartered in Seattle, was founded in 2011, and has a footprint spanning more than 175 countries. It describes the business as evolving beyond remittances into cross-border financial services for consumers and businesses.

In its August 2026 Q2 results release, Remitly reported more than 10 million quarterly active customers, 27% year-over-year growth in send volume, and 20% year-over-year revenue growth. These are company-reported metrics for Q2 2026, not figures from the 2020 funding announcement and not a current valuation.

What the $85 million round meant

The financing marked a significant private-market milestone: PayU led an $85 million equity round, and contemporaneous coverage put Remitly’s valuation at $1.5 billion. It also captured investor interest in a digital alternative for cross-border transfers at a time when the company said customer growth was strong. The available 2020 reporting supports those points, but does not show how the round’s proceeds were allocated or establish the company’s present value.
