Not through the share purchase she first proposed. Anne Wojcicki’s bid to buy additional 23andMe shares was rejected in March 2025. Months later, TTAM Research Institute, the nonprofit she founded and led, acquired 23andMe’s Personal Genome Service and Research Services in a court-supervised bankruptcy sale. That brought those businesses under her control through an asset acquisition—not a purchase of the former public company’s shares.
How Wojcicki regained control—and what she did not buy
The distinction is important for shareholders and customers alike: an asset sale transfers specified businesses and assets, while a share purchase buys ownership interests in a company. The completed deal put 23andMe’s consumer DNA-testing and research businesses under TTAM; it was not the completion of Wojcicki’s earlier proposal to buy shares.
| Date | Event | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| March 3, 2025 | 23andMe’s Special Committee rejected Wojcicki’s non-binding proposal to buy shares she and her affiliates did not own. The proposed price was $0.41 per share; the committee compared it with $2.53 per share in an earlier joint non-binding proposal, describing the new price as an 84% decrease. | This proposal was rejected. It was not the later bankruptcy asset sale. 23andMe Special Committee announcement, March 3, 2025. |
| March 23, 2025 | 23andMe and certain subsidiaries filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, according to the company’s later SEC-filed sale announcement. | The bankruptcy process led to a court-supervised sale. SEC-filed sale announcement, June 30, 2025. |
| June 30, 2025 | The company announced court approval of an agreement to sell substantially all assets and ongoing operations to TTAM for $305 million. The agreement named Personal Genome Service, Research Services, and Lemonaid Health among the assets covered. | This was the approved sale agreement; the completion announcement later confirmed specific business lines. SEC-filed sale announcement, June 30, 2025. |
| July 14, 2025 | TTAM announced it had completed the acquisition of the Personal Genome Service and Research Services business lines. | TTAM said personalized DNA testing and research services continued under it. The completion announcement does not establish that every asset named in the sale agreement remained an operating service. SEC-filed completion announcement, July 14, 2025. |
Accordingly, “Wojcicki bought back 23andMe” is shorthand that can obscure the transaction. The buyer named in the completed sale was TTAM Research Institute, described in the company’s announcement as a nonprofit public benefit corporation founded and led by Wojcicki.
What happened to the customer-facing business
TTAM said the Personal Genome Service and Research Services continued after the acquisition, including personalized DNA testing and research services. This supports saying that the core DNA-testing business carried on under new ownership. It does not establish the full current product catalog, availability in every market, or that Lemonaid Health continued as an operating service.

Why customer genetic data is central to the deal
The transaction took place against the backdrop of a major breach. Maryland’s Attorney General said the 2023 breach affected 6.9 million customers worldwide. In July 2026, the office announced a multistate settlement resolving claims related to the breach, reporting $18 million recovered from available bankruptcy funds.
The Maryland office said the attorneys general’s investigation found unreasonable security practices, including inadequate protection against credential-stuffing attacks, insufficient rate limiting and intrusion prevention, gaps in logging and monitoring, inadequate responses to unusual login patterns, failure to remediate known vulnerabilities, and insufficient review and testing of design features. These are findings about the practices investigated in connection with the breach; they do not establish the security condition of the business today. Maryland Attorney General, July 14, 2026.

Safeguards reported as part of the sale terms
Maryland’s Attorney General said the sale terms included enhanced data-security requirements, risk analysis, an advisory board, a commitment to be bound by comprehensive privacy laws without exception, and an agreement to offer consumers deletion rights. The state’s announcement describes terms of the sale and settlement; it is not a guarantee that privacy or security risks have been eliminated.
Privacy oversight announced after the acquisition
In October 2025, 23andMe Research Institute announced a Privacy Advisory Board to advise on member information, responsible data stewardship, privacy regulation, and the privacy implications of new services and technologies. That is a documented governance step, not proof by itself that the board’s advice has produced particular outcomes. 23andMe Research Institute, October 30, 2025.

What the nonprofit has done since taking over
The institute’s 2026 announcements show that research activity continued. In April, it described a study of genetic predictors of GLP-1 medication response using a sample of 27,885 medication users. In May, it reported studying ancient DNA from 49 Maryland colonists and described more than 1.3 million living genetic relatives connected to the settlers, using a database of more than 11.5 million research participants to examine genetic-sharing patterns. Those are figures and descriptions reported by the institute; they demonstrate research activity, not the breadth of its current consumer services.

The sale and subsequent announcements establish a change in control, continued operation of the named testing and research businesses, reported privacy safeguards in the sale terms, and new privacy governance. They do not establish the exact current account-deletion workflow, every term of the current privacy policy, or geographic exceptions that may apply to particular accounts. Customers seeking to make a decision about their own account should check the current official account and privacy information directly rather than assume the announced deletion commitment answers every practical question.
