AAA’s Gig Car Share ended service in Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area on December 5, 2024, according to AAA’s retained Gig page. The one-way car-sharing service cited lower demand, higher operating costs and changing commuting patterns. Gig is no longer an option for local trips; anyone choosing a replacement should verify its current service area, pricing and terms.
When did Gig Car Share close?
AAA’s retained Gig page gives December 5, 2024, as the date operations concluded in Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area. That is later information than the date first reported when the shutdown was announced: Taylor Soper’s July 2024 GeekWire report said customers had initially been told to expect service to end December 27, 2024. The December 27 date was the original plan, not the final closure date.
Why did AAA shut it down?
In the customer email quoted by GeekWire, Gig said: “Since launching Gig Car Share, we have continuously evolved our offerings based on Member feedback and demand.” It then explained: “Despite our best efforts, there have been challenges — primarily around decreased demand, rising operational costs, and changes to consumer commuting patterns.”
The company did not provide quantified figures for those factors in the report, so the available information does not establish how much each contributed or whether Gig operated at a loss.

How Gig worked in Seattle
Gig launched in Seattle in 2020 with 250 Toyota Prius hybrid cars and later expanded its local fleet to 400, according to GeekWire’s 2024 coverage. Members used an app to find and unlock a car. The free-floating, one-way model let drivers travel within the service area and end a trip by parking the vehicle inside a designated “HomeZone,” rather than returning it to its starting location.
GeekWire reported that fuel and insurance were included and that Gig had an airport parking zone near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. These are historical details of the service, not current transportation offers.
