American Airlines announced temporary schedule adjustments for August and September 2026 affecting six reported U.S. routes. The available reports do not establish that hundreds of individual flights were cancelled. If you have a booking on one of the routes, check your reservation directly with American: the airline said it would rebook affected customers or offer refunds.
What American Airlines announced
American told CBS News it was adjusting schedules on select routes in August and September 2026 because of elevated fuel costs. The company said the changes were temporary, not indefinite route cuts. The Associated Press also reported the schedule adjustments and the airline’s explanation, while noting that American had not immediately provided details of the specific flights being suspended.
CBS News identified these six affected routes:
- Los Angeles–Cleveland
- Los Angeles–Columbus
- Los Angeles–Pittsburgh
- Los Angeles–Washington Dulles
- Charlotte–Ontario
- Charlotte–Sacramento
American’s spokesperson told CBS News: “American is not suspending any routes indefinitely as part of this adjustment.”
Were hundreds of flights actually cancelled?
That count is not established by the available reporting. Six named routes do not tell us how many departures were affected: the reports do not provide a complete list of dates or flight numbers, or a total count of individual cancellations. It is accurate to describe the news as temporary schedule adjustments affecting six reported routes, not as a verified cancellation total in the hundreds.

Perilogics Universal Airplane Phone Holder Mount, Plane Travel Essentials
- Trusted by Travelers Worldwide: Trusted by over 1.5 million travelers, this practical airplane phone holder is a must-have travel accessory for flights, vacations, work trips, and everyday hands-free viewing. A useful gift for frequent flyers.
- Universal Phone Compatibility: Securely fits most smartphones from 2.17" to 3.82" wide and up to 0.43 inches thick with cases, including iPhone 12/13/14/15/16/17 series, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and most mobile phones. Please note that extra-thick rugged cases, battery cases, phone wallets and large grips may reduce clamping stability.
- Secure Grip With Proper Mounting: The adjustable base clamp opens up to 1.6 in / 4 cm and attaches to firm, flat edges such as standard tray tables, desks, shelves, and compatible luggage handles. Avoid rounded, padded, flexible, or irregular surfaces.
- Flexible Viewing Angles: Dual 360° rotating joints let you position your phone in portrait or landscape mode for movies, reading, browsing, video calls, and other hands-free viewing. Adjust the screen easily to your preferred angle.
- More Than a Plane Accessory: Use it for video calls at your desk, recipes in the kitchen, videos at a café, live streaming or selfie videos, hotel-room viewing, or as a compact phone stand at home. Also works on compatible luggage handles.
National cancellation statistics do not fill that gap. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported that 2.0% of flights were cancelled nationally in August 2024; for August 2023, it reported 9,475 cancellations among 640,236 scheduled domestic flights, or 1.5%. Those are historical, nationwide figures—not American-specific counts for 2026.
What to do if your itinerary is affected
- Check your reservation with American. Review your current itinerary in the airline’s booking tools or contact American directly. The news reports do not specify every affected date or flight number, so a route announcement alone cannot confirm whether your particular trip has changed.
- Compare the replacement itinerary with your needs. American told CBS it would arrange another flight for affected ticket holders. Check whether the proposed timing and connections work for you before deciding whether to accept it.
- Consider a refund if you do not want the changed trip. American’s Conditions of Carriage, updated August 13, 2026, describe a ticketed-fare refund option when a flight is cancelled or significantly changed and the passenger elects not to travel on the changed itinerary. Review the current conditions and your reservation for the terms that apply to your booking.
- Check any separate travel-insurance policy. If you have nonrefundable costs beyond your ticket, consult the policy wording and your purchase details. The available reporting does not establish that a policy will cover those expenses.
How DOT’s dashboard can help
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Airline Cancellation and Delay Dashboard compares services airlines commit to provide for controllable disruptions. DOT describes a controllable cancellation or delay as one essentially caused by the airline. The dashboard can help you understand airline commitments, but it does not determine the cause or remedy for every disruption; check the facts of your flight and the airline’s current terms.
