The available reporting does not verify that Amtrak’s busiest route had cancellations at the same time as FAA flight cuts, or establish that the two disruptions had different causes. It documents a September 21, 2026, FAA communications outage in the Northeast and separate Amtrak infrastructure work scheduled for October. Those are distinct events, not evidence of the headline’s claimed pairing.
What is confirmed—and what is not
The Associated Press reported that an FAA communications failure disrupted air traffic in the Northeast on September 21, 2026. Separately, Amtrak announced planned service adjustments for October infrastructure projects. The available sources do not identify a date and affected trains that confirm Amtrak cancellations on its busiest route coincided with the FAA flight cuts.
That distinction matters: without the date, route and train numbers, it is not possible to determine which Amtrak service the headline describes or explain its cause. The documented September and October events should not be treated as simultaneous.
What happened during the September FAA outage
According to the Associated Press report of September 21, 2026, a primary communications circuit at the FAA’s Philadelphia facility failed, while railroad construction workers had severed the backup fiber-optic line. Controllers were without radar or communications for hours. Newark commercial air traffic came near a standstill for much of the day, and more than 200 flights into and out of Philadelphia International Airport were canceled.

The initial attribution for the severed line was disputed. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy initially blamed an Amtrak construction crew; Amtrak pointed to an NJ TRANSIT construction crew working between Newark and New Brunswick. The report does not establish that Northeast Regional trains were canceled at the same time for a separate reason.
Amtrak’s October work was scheduled separately

Amtrak’s September 17 announcement said the final track transfer would begin October 9. Temporary rail service adjustments were due to start October 11 and last approximately five weeks, with regular schedules expected to resume November 15 subject to safety testing. Amtrak also planned eight additional maintenance projects during the reduced-traffic period. These were scheduled infrastructure changes, not part of the September FAA outage.

Washington A-Interlocking repairs
In a separate notice, Amtrak said a temporary outage from October 16 through October 26 would allow crews to replace aging switches and crossovers and rehabilitate track in the First Street Tunnel. Its August 24 announcement warned that travelers going to or from Washington from the south should expect service reductions and cancellations. Amtrak said the work would improve reliability and address a 10-mph restriction.
Why flight cuts and train cancellations need separate explanations
A disruption to one transportation system does not by itself explain a service change in another. The September event involved FAA communications equipment and a severed backup fiber line, with the crew attribution initially disputed. The October Amtrak notices described planned track and bridge work. The sources do not show that these were concurrent events or that one caused the other.

For a specific flight, the FAA’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center FAQ says: “The FAA/Air Traffic Control does not cancel flights. You will need to contact your airline to determine why they canceled your flight.” Airline status and the airline’s explanation are therefore the relevant checks for an individual canceled flight.
Check your train or flight before you travel
- Amtrak: Check the service-alert page for your route and departure date, then confirm the status of your individual train.
- Flight: Check your airline’s flight status and contact the airline for the cancellation reason, as the FAA directs.
- When comparing reports: Match the date, location and specific service affected. A planned Amtrak advisory for October does not confirm train cancellations during the September FAA outage.
What Amtrak’s on-time figures can—and cannot—tell you
Amtrak’s October 2025 Host Railroad Report lists Northeast Regional all-stations on-time performance at 85.1% for the current month and 77.8% for the most recent 12 months. Amtrak labels those figures preliminary. They measure on-time performance, not cancellations, and do not establish what happened during the September 2026 FAA outage.
