You can still pay to choose a seat, or let American assign one for free at check-in. The cutoff is based on when you bought the ticket, not when you fly.
What changed—and which tickets are affected?
American announced the change on April 9, 2026. For Basic Economy tickets bought May 18, 2026 or later, every traveler must pay to select a seat in advance, including AAdvantage status members. These tickets also are not eligible for complimentary or systemwide upgrades. American’s announcement sets the cutoff by purchase date, so a ticket bought before May 18 is not covered by this specific change simply because its flight occurs later.
American has not published a universal seat-selection fee in the materials announcing the change. The price can depend on the itinerary and seat; check the live booking display for your trip rather than assuming one amount applies everywhere.
If you do not pay to pick a seat
American assigns a seat for free at check-in. The airline says it cannot guarantee that people traveling together will be seated together, even when they are on the same ticket. If sitting beside a companion matters, compare the fee for selecting seats with the price of Main Cabin before buying.

What Basic Economy still includes
The seat-selection change does not remove the fare’s standard onboard inclusions. American lists one personal item that fits under the seat, one carry-on bag for the overhead bin, free snacks and soft drinks, and inflight entertainment. Basic Economy generally does not include a free checked bag, although exceptions apply based on factors such as status, eligible cards, and itinerary. Check the current Basic Economy policy and your trip’s baggage details.
American’s policy says Basic Economy passengers generally board last, typically in Group 9, with eligible AAdvantage members and eligible cardmembers boarding in the group shown on their boarding pass. The airline separately announced that later in 2026, AAdvantage members without status or a qualifying co-branded card would board in Group 7. It did not specify an implementation date for that planned boarding change; it is separate from the May 18 seat-selection cutoff.

Other restrictions to check before buying
Miles and Loyalty Points
Under American’s current policy, Basic Economy tickets purchased from 12:00 a.m. Central Time on December 17, 2025 do not earn AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points. This rule has a different cutoff from the May 18, 2026 seat-selection change.
Changes and cancellations
American says Basic Economy tickets generally cannot be changed. Exceptions include the 24-hour cancellation window and certain cases tied to the route and traveler eligibility. Review the terms that apply to your itinerary before purchase; do not assume that a later change of plans can be handled like a Main Cabin ticket.

Checked-bag fees
Bag charges vary by route and purchase date. As one dated example, American announced that for domestic Basic Economy tickets bought May 18, 2026 or later, the first checked bag would cost $55 at the airport or $50 prepaid, and a second would cost $65 at the airport or $60 prepaid. These are the announcement’s domestic examples, not a universal quote for every route or a substitute for checking the airline’s current fee information.

Compare the full cost and the restrictions that matter to your trip, not just the fare shown first. Add any seat-selection and checked-bag charges to the Basic Economy price, then compare that total with Main Cabin. There is no single answer for every traveler: the value depends on your itinerary, seat needs, baggage, and flexibility.

- Seat needs: If you need a particular seat or want to sit beside someone, include the seat-selection charge—or the risk of separate assignments—in your comparison.
- Upgrades and loyalty earning: Consider that tickets bought on or after May 18, 2026 lose eligibility for complimentary and systemwide upgrades, while the separate December 17, 2025 rule excludes miles and Loyalty Points.
- Bags: Count checked-bag charges if you need them. Basic Economy still includes a personal item and carry-on, subject to the under-seat and overhead-bin requirements.
- Flexibility: Account for the general restriction on ticket changes and verify any applicable exception before relying on it.
Basic Economy began as American’s lower-price, more restrictive fare in 2017, when the airline said it was intended to help it compete with ultra-low-cost carriers. The original baggage rules have since changed: the current policy includes a carry-on, so older descriptions saying most Basic Economy passengers cannot bring one should not be treated as current.
