The fundraiser far exceeded that goal. Diarte-Carr said money beyond funeral costs would go into a trust fund for her children; the available sources do not establish how much was ultimately placed in a trust or paid to the family.
Why Erika Diarte-Carr started the fundraiser
Diarte-Carr’s campaign, titled “Support Erika: A Mother planning her own funeral,” listed a June 26, 2024 start date and an original goal of $5,000. The stated purpose was to cover funeral expenses and leave support for her children, Jeremiah and Aaliyah. GoFundMe campaign
In the campaign, Diarte-Carr said she was diagnosed with stage 4 small cell lung carcinoma on May 7, 2022, after going to an emergency room because she thought she had injured her shoulder. She also said she was diagnosed with Cushing Syndrome on January 17, 2024. These are details she provided in the campaign; the cited reports do not independently review her medical records.
A September 18, 2024 campaign update said her oncologist had told her treatment would no longer help and that she had three months to live. Diarte-Carr wrote that she chose to stop treatment and plan her funeral. GoFundMe campaign

The amount shown depends on when it was observed. On October 7, 2026, the campaign page displayed $1,201,706 raised from 38,813 donations against the original $5,000 goal, with donations paused. Those are figures displayed on the page at that date—not a verified account of the final proceeds available to the family. GoFundMe campaign
News coverage reported different totals at earlier dates. PerthNow said the fundraiser had passed $1.5 million by the end of September 2024, while ABC News reported that it had raised more than $1 million. These historical figures reflect different reporting and observation dates, so they should not be treated as the same snapshot or added together. PerthNow; ABC News

What was intended for her children
Diarte-Carr said in the campaign that funds exceeding her funeral-cost goal would be put into a trust fund for her children. That records her stated intention, not confirmation that a trust was established or a particular amount was transferred. The cited sources do not establish the final campaign proceeds after fees or other adjustments, the trust’s balance, or the amount ultimately received by the children.
