Amazon is not currently reported to be dropping USPS. After months of negotiations and reports that it might sharply reduce shipments, Amazon said on April 6, 2026, that it had reached a new agreement with the Postal Service. Reuters sources estimated that USPS would keep about 80% of Amazon’s existing deliveries—more than one billion packages a year—but the agreement’s terms and actual post-deal volumes have not been disclosed in the sources cited here.

What changed in the Amazon–USPS negotiations?

The earlier headline that Amazon was considering leaving USPS described a negotiation threat, not a completed exit. On December 4, 2025, TechCrunch, citing The Washington Post, reported that Amazon was considering ending its long-standing USPS agreement and expanding its own competing delivery network. Amazon spokesperson Steve Kelly said the company remained committed to working with USPS while it evaluated options amid uncertainty about a proposed auction. TechCrunch’s December 2025 report did not say Amazon had withdrawn.

The situation escalated in March 2026. Reuters reported that a person briefed on the matter said Amazon planned to sharply cut USPS shipments, potentially by at least two-thirds by September. USPS Postmaster General David Steiner said at the time that negotiations were continuing and he could not predict the outcome. Amazon disputed the characterization of its plans: in a March 18 company statement, it said its goal had been to increase volume and claimed USPS had walked away from talks in December. Those are the parties’ accounts, not an independently established finding about who caused the impasse. Reuters reported the threatened cuts and USPS’s position; Amazon’s statement set out the company’s view.

Did Amazon reach a new deal with USPS?

Yes. Amazon said on April 6, 2026, that it had reached a new agreement with USPS. The announcement superseded the earlier conditional threat as the clearest public account of the relationship’s status. USPS leadership later described progress as well: in prepared remarks on May 8, Postmaster General and CEO David Steiner said USPS had seen “encouraging developments” in key customer relationships, including Amazon and DHL. That comment indicates an improved relationship, but it does not disclose contract terms or confirm delivery volumes. Reuters’ April 6 report, republished by Investing.com, covered the agreement announcement; Steiner’s May 8 prepared remarks are available from USPS.

How many Amazon packages will USPS still deliver?

Reuters sources estimated that the agreement would retain around 80% of Amazon’s existing USPS deliveries, or more than one billion packages per year. This is a source-attributed estimate—not a published contract term or a guarantee of actual annual volume. The sources cited here do not provide a verified count of packages shipped under the new agreement.

Amazon said in its March 18 statement that it had spent over $5 billion annually with USPS in recent years and described the partnership as 30 years old. Those figures are Amazon’s own characterization, not a USPS-published accounting of the new agreement. Amazon’s statement gives its account of the relationship.

What is still unknown about the agreement?

The public statements and reporting cited here do not establish the new agreement’s precise duration, pricing, implementation schedule, or full terms. Nor do they confirm the actual volume USPS will handle after the deal. Amazon’s March statement cited September 30, 2026, as the expiration date of its existing agreement; that date alone does not establish the term of the new agreement. Until Amazon or USPS publishes further details, the reported 80% figure should be treated as an estimate, not a contractual commitment.
