When did Book Depository close?
Book Depository announced its closure in April 2023. Its final order cutoff was midday British Summer Time on 26 April. The retailer’s customer notice, reproduced by ABC News on 5 April 2023, said: “we will continue to deliver your purchases and provide support for any order issues until 23 June 2023.” TechCrunch also reported the order cutoff and end of customer support and delivery on 23 June 2023.
Those dates describe the 2023 shutdown: the notice did not mean Book Depository would keep accepting orders through June. Orders had to be placed before the April cutoff; the later date covered fulfillment and support for existing orders.
Was it exactly 18 years after Book Depository began?
Book Depository was founded in 2004 and Amazon acquired it in 2011, according to The Guardian. The reporting gives years, not precise founding and closure dates, so “after 18 years” is a rounded description rather than a verified exact elapsed interval.

What customers valued—and what “free worldwide delivery” meant
ABC News reported in 2023 that Book Depository’s website advertised more than 20 million books and free delivery to over 120 countries. Those were the retailer’s own website claims as reported at the time, not an independent audit or a description of a service available today.
Readers also described the appeal in practical terms: a broad choice of books and editions, affordable prices, and international delivery. CNA quoted customer Tan Min Young saying she would miss its “various choices and covers at very affordable pricing with free international shipping to my doorstep.” That is one customer’s experience, not evidence that every title or destination had identical prices or shipping terms.

How to choose a bookseller now
There is no verified universal replacement for Book Depository’s former offer. Compare the specific book and your delivery destination rather than relying on a general promise of free shipping. Before ordering, check:
- Title and edition: Confirm the exact format, language, edition, and availability.
- Total delivered price: Add shipping, taxes, and any import charges shown for your destination; a low listed price can cost more once delivered.
- Destination coverage: Confirm the seller ships that item to your country and review any country-specific exclusions.
- Delivery estimate: Check the estimated arrival window at checkout, especially if you need the book by a particular date.
Shipping policies and delivery estimates can vary by country, item, and seller, so confirm the current terms for your own order. A bookseller’s general international-shipping statement is not proof that delivery is free to every address.
