Patty Stonesifer was named interim CEO of The Washington Post on June 12, 2023, after publisher and CEO Fred Ryan announced he would step down. Her assignment was temporary: she was to oversee the leadership team and help guide the organization through a transition while owner Jeff Bezos selected a permanent leader.

Why Stonesifer was appointed

Ryan announced on June 12, 2023, that he would leave the publisher and CEO role after nine years. The Post named Stonesifer interim CEO the same day, describing her remit as overseeing the leadership team and steering the organization through the transition. The Post’s announcement made clear this was an interim appointment, not a permanent promotion.

In an interview with the Post that day, Stonesifer said she would help Bezos choose the permanent publisher and CEO. She described the immediate work as filling “a couple really important jobs,” beginning with the publisher and CEO role. The interview also identified other senior roles as needing attention.

How long she served

The Post announced William Lewis as publisher and CEO on November 4, 2023, with his appointment effective January 2, 2024. He succeeded Stonesifer. The succession announcement and Amazon’s director biography place her interim service from June 2023 to January 2024.

Stonesifer’s background and Amazon connection

When she took the interim role, Stonesifer was an Amazon director and had experience in technology, nonprofit leadership and organizational management. The Post described her as a former senior Microsoft executive, a leader who helped Bill and Melinda Gates establish their foundation, and the then-recent president and CEO of Washington, D.C., nonprofit Martha’s Table. Amazon’s current director biography records her Washington Post interim service and identifies her as an Amazon director; the company says she joined its board in February 1997.

The roles should not be conflated: Stonesifer served on Amazon’s board, while Jeff Bezos owned The Washington Post. Her Amazon board position did not make Amazon the owner of the newspaper.
