What Amazon announced—and what it later reported
On June 24, 2025, Amazon said it planned to extend Prime Same-Day and Next-Day Delivery to tens of millions of U.S. customers in more than 4,000 smaller cities, towns, and rural communities by the end of that year. The announcement described a target, not blanket service for everyone in those places. In a 2026 recap of 2025, Amazon said the expansion reached more than 4,000 smaller communities across 44 states. It also said the average number of monthly rural Same-Day customers nearly doubled in 2025 compared with 2024. Those reach and usage figures are Amazon’s own reported results; they are not independent measurements.
Why delivery may be faster in smaller communities
Amazon said it was converting existing rural delivery stations into hybrid hubs that hold inventory closer to customers. The company described using machine-learning predictions to select popular and locally relevant products for those sites. Broadly popular examples included coffee pods, crackers, paper towels, and diapers; locally tailored examples included wild bird food in Dubuque, Iowa, travel backpacks in Findlay, Ohio, and after-sun body butter in Sharptown, Maryland. These examples illustrate the approach, not a guaranteed assortment for each town.

Amazon separately said it planned to invest more than $4 billion, expand to over 200 rural delivery stations, and triple the size of its rural network by the end of 2026. The company estimated that the expanded network could reach more than 13,000 ZIP codes and 1.2 million square miles. How to check whether your address and order qualify
- Set your delivery address in Amazon, then open the Same-Day store or check the delivery label on an individual product page.
- Look for the delivery date and time shown for that address. A town included in Amazon’s expansion does not by itself establish eligibility for every address or item.
- At checkout, review the order minimum and whether the items qualify. Amazon says Same-Day Delivery is free for Prime members spending $25 or more in most U.S. areas, but some locations have different minimums.
What the expansion means for household budgets
For a household outside a major metro area, faster access to everyday goods may reduce the need to wait for a later delivery window. But the announcement does not establish that the expansion lowers household costs, replaces local shopping, or makes every order free. The practical value depends on whether the needed item is eligible at the customer’s address, whether the order meets the local minimum, and whether the delivery timing is useful.
