a16z Games announced a commitment to invest up to $75 million through its 2024 Speedrun program for promising pre-seed startups at the intersection of games and technology. The figure was a ceiling announced for the program—not confirmation that a16z ultimately invested the full amount.

What was the $75 million commitment for?

In its announcement, the a16z Speedrun account said it would commit up to $75 million to the 2024 cohort’s most promising pre-seed startups working at the intersection of Games x Tech. The post did not name an individual speaker or say how much of the commitment was ultimately deployed. Read the announcement on LinkedIn.

The announced per-startup investment was $500,000. The program was described as a 10-week accelerator with an in-person Bay Area component and a Demo Day associated with GDC. Those details describe the 2024 cohort; they should not be treated as the current offer.

What is a16z Speedrun?

Speedrun is a startup program run by Andreessen Horowitz’s Games group. The 2024 edition focused on pre-seed companies where games and technology intersected. Later materials describe a broader remit spanning technology and entertainment, including 3D, creative tools, gaming, streaming and XR. See a16z’s Speedrun overview and its 2025 relaunch announcement.

That evolution matters for founders assessing fit: Speedrun’s original Games x Tech framing is not the only category description used in later program materials.

How much does a16z invest in Speedrun startups?

The answer depends on the cohort. For Speedrun 2024, the announced investment was $500,000 per participating startup. A later SR007 announcement described a different structure: $500,000 for 10% upfront via a SAFE, with a further $500,000 invested in the next round within 18 months. Current materials describe the program as offering up to $1 million, but those later terms must not be applied retroactively to 2024.

For the later cohort’s specific terms and dates, consult the SR007 announcement. The program’s official FAQ describes Speedrun as a 12-week program and reports an acceptance rate below 0.4%; that rate is a program-reported figure, not an independently verified statistic.

Why did a16z repeat the program?

Speedrun’s 2024 announcement cited results from the preceding cohort as its rationale: 32 startups selected from more than 1,600 applicants, and 80% said to have secured additional funding after Demo Day. These are figures reported by Speedrun itself. The announcement does not state the year for those prior-cohort figures, and they should not be read as independently audited outcomes.

What founders should take from the announcement

  • “Up to” is significant: $75 million was the announced commitment ceiling, not a disclosed final investment total.
  • The cohort terms are historical: the $500,000 investment and 10-week format belong to the 2024 program description.
  • Later terms differ: the later SR007 offer and broader category scope reflect subsequent program materials, not a revision of the 2024 announcement.
  • Reported outcomes need attribution: the applicant, selection and follow-on funding figures came from Speedrun’s account.

Founders comparing accelerators should examine the actual investment terms and any follow-on rights, program length and location, category fit, operating support, and access to a founder and investor network. The Speedrun materials describe elements of its own offer; they do not establish how it compares with other programs.
