AI Mortgage Startup LoanSnap Faces Legal Challenges and Financial Uncertainty

LoanSnap’s mortgage originations plunged, creditors sued, and Connecticut and California revoked mortgage-lending licenses in 2024. Its operating and financial status as of October 2026 remains unverified.

LoanSnap’s mortgage business contracted sharply before two state regulators revoked its mortgage-lending licenses in 2024. The company also faced creditor lawsuits and reported staffing and payroll problems. Those events document serious strain, but the available information does not establish whether LoanSnap is operating or insolvent as of October 7, 2026.

What happened to LoanSnap?

Founded in 2017, LoanSnap marketed artificial intelligence as a way to simplify home lending. Its lending volume later fell dramatically: federal mortgage data showed nearly 1,300 loans totaling almost $500 million in 2021, while the final reported figure for 2023 was 42 loans totaling $3.6 million, according to TechCrunch’s coverage citing federal data.

That contraction coincided with lawsuits from creditors and reports in 2024 of missed payroll, staff reductions and office difficulties. In October 2024, Connecticut and California each revoked a LoanSnap mortgage-lending license, for different reasons and through different processes. These events are evidence of financial and operational pressure; they do not, by themselves, prove bankruptcy, dissolution or a company-wide shutdown.

How sharply did its mortgage lending decline?

Year Reported mortgage originations Source and qualification
2021 Nearly 1,300 loans totaling almost $500 million Federal mortgage data, as reported by TechCrunch.
2023 42 loans totaling $3.6 million Final figure from subsequently released CFPB data, as reported by TechCrunch in October 2024.

TechCrunch’s June 2024 story had cited 122 loans for 2023, while noting the data might not be final. Its later report used subsequently released CFPB data and gave the final reported total of 42. The later figure is the more complete one; the two counts reflect different data stages, not necessarily a contradiction.

What legal and financial pressures were reported?

Fundraising and an earlier HUD settlement

TechCrunch reported in June 2024, citing PitchBook, that LoanSnap had raised around $100 million since its seed round, including about $90 million between 2021 and 2023. The reported fundraising did not prevent the later lending-volume decline or the reported creditor and staffing difficulties.

TechCrunch also reported that HUD’s Mortgagee Review Board entered a settlement agreement with LoanSnap in May 2021. HUD alleged the company had failed to notify the FHA of an operating loss exceeding 20% of its fiscal 2019 quarter-end net worth. LoanSnap did not admit wrongdoing and agreed to a $25,000 fine, according to TechCrunch.

Creditor lawsuits and a judgment

TechCrunch reported at least seven creditor suits filed from December 2022 through May 2024. Plaintiffs collectively alleged that LoanSnap owed more than $2 million. That figure is a reported total of claims, not a finding that a court established a single debt of that amount.

The disputes described in reporting included vendor claims, a Wells Fargo suit involving a mortgage loan LoanSnap had sold, a landlord action and a suit by a tax company. The Connecticut regulator’s October 2024 order separately recited some litigation and identified a Wells Fargo default judgment for $431,511.75. A default judgment is a court judgment in that case; it should not be conflated with the broader alleged amount across creditor suits.

Staffing, payroll and office problems

In 2024, TechCrunch reported missed payroll, staff reductions and problems involving the company’s offices. These details were reported as company or employee information, rather than findings in a court judgment or regulator order. The same June 2024 reporting said LoanSnap had not yet shut down at that time; that historical statement does not establish its present operating status.

Did LoanSnap lose its mortgage licenses?

Yes. Connecticut and California each revoked a mortgage-lending license in October 2024, but the orders describe different state actions and should not be treated as a single nationwide licensing determination.

State and regulator Action and date What the record says
Connecticut Banking Commissioner Consent order issued October 2, 2024; mortgage-lender license revoked. The order says the license had been automatically suspended on July 11, 2024, following address and bond-related failures. It lists regulator allegations concerning NMLS updates, required procedures, disclosure of judgments and lawsuits, a quarterly mortgage call report, and licensing statements on LoanSnap’s website. LoanSnap consented to the sanction without admitting or denying the allegations. The order also records LoanSnap’s representation that it had no pending Connecticut loan applications and had ceased mortgage lending in the state.
California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) Residential mortgage lender license revoked October 18, 2024. The DFPI order says the surety bond expired August 4, 2024, and was not replaced. It allowed 60 days to complete loans for which commitments had already been made.

TechCrunch reported a $75,000 fine in connection with a May 2024 Connecticut consent order. The October Connecticut order establishes the later revocation; it is distinct from that earlier reported fine. In particular, the October order is a consent resolution, not a court finding that LoanSnap admitted the listed allegations.

Is LoanSnap still operating?

The available information does not establish whether LoanSnap is operating, insolvent, dissolved, sold or shut down as of October 7, 2026. The latest specifically described public lookup here is limited: California’s Department of Real Estate (DRE) records dated September 19, 2026 list “Loansnap Company, Inc.” with a real-estate corporation license that expired August 21, 2021, and no current main-office address on file.

That DRE entry is not a current mortgage-lender license determination. It concerns a separate real-estate corporation license, not the California DFPI residential mortgage lender license revoked in 2024. Nor does a record for that license establish the company’s overall operating or insolvency status.
