Venmo problems have different fixes depending on whether a payment was declined, is pending, a bank will not link, the app shows an error, or the account is frozen. Read the full error message first, then check transaction history before retrying: a technical error does not prove the payment failed. Use the matching steps below rather than sending the payment again or trying unrelated workarounds.
Why Venmo may not be working
These are ten practical categories drawn from Venmo’s troubleshooting guidance, not an official ranking or a guarantee that every issue fits one of them. A decline can come from the bank or card issuer, or from Venmo’s automated security checks; the message alone may not identify which party made the decision.
1. Your bank or card issuer declined the transaction
A bank or card issuer can decline a transaction outside Venmo’s control. Follow any instructions in the error and contact the issuer if the message points there. Venmo’s Payment Declined guidance also notes that a decline may involve Venmo’s own security checks.
2. Venmo’s automated security checks flagged the payment
Venmo says an attempted payment can trigger automated security flags, but does not explain the specific reason for an individual flag in its general troubleshooting guidance. An alternate supported funding source or waiting may help in some cases; neither bypasses an account restriction. If the problem persists, contact Venmo through its official support channels.

3. Insufficient funds or an ACH limit caused a bank-payment failure
A bank payment can fail if the account lacks sufficient funds or the bank’s permitted number of ACH transfers has been exceeded. Ask the bank about the specific decline rather than assuming Venmo can change the bank’s decision. Venmo describes these possibilities in its failed-payment account guidance.
4. The connection or device lacks capacity
For a generic app error, check that Wi-Fi or mobile data is working and that the device has enough available storage and memory. Switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data can help isolate a connection problem.

5. A VPN or temporary app session is interfering
Venmo recommends temporarily turning off a VPN and signing out of the app, then signing back in when an error does not offer more specific instructions.
6. The app or operating system needs an update
Venmo recommends reinstalling the app to ensure that the current version is installed and updating the device’s operating system. Its help pages give conflicting minimum iOS requirements, so there is no reliable single iOS version threshold to quote here. Both pages state Android API 26, but check Venmo’s current requirements for your device before relying on a compatibility figure. See Error Messages and Requirements.

7. You are outside a supported location or do not meet a usage requirement
Venmo says users must be physically located in the United States and meet its phone and age requirements. Its error guidance says sign-in is available only from the U.S.; a VPN does not change your physical location or eligibility.
8. The bank details are invalid or the account cannot use ACH
A bank link can fail because routing or account numbers were mistyped, the bank cannot find the account, the account is not eligible for ACH, transaction limits were exceeded, or funds are held. Venmo’s Invalid Bank Account guidance recommends checking the details and confirming account access with the bank.

9. The bank authorization disconnected or verification is incomplete
A changed online banking password can disconnect a linked account. Venmo says to remove the bank account and add it again. If you are verifying manually, the small deposits or debits may take one to three business days to appear; see Verifying Your Bank Account.
10. The recipient has not completed setup, or an account review is delaying activity
A payment sent to a phone number or email address that is not verified or associated with a Venmo account may remain pending. Identity or risk reviews can also delay, block, or limit transactions and withdrawals. Venmo says identity-document review can take up to three business days; consult its identity document requirements if the app requests documents.

What to do, matched to the problem
For a general app error
- Read the complete error and follow any specific instruction it gives.
- Check Wi-Fi or mobile data and make sure the device has available storage and memory.
- Turn off a VPN temporarily, then sign out and sign back in.
- Update the device operating system. Update or reinstall Venmo; Venmo says deleting and reinstalling the app does not affect the account.
- Open Venmo’s transaction history before trying again. A “Bad state” or other technical message can occur when Venmo is experiencing technical issues, but does not establish whether your payment completed.
For a declined payment
Follow the decline instructions and check whether the bank or card issuer needs to resolve it. If Venmo permits it, try another supported funding source or your Venmo balance, if available. This may not help with an account restriction or an issuer-specific decline. Once a payment has been sent, its payment method cannot be changed.
For a pending payment
Check the status in your transaction feed and confirm that the payment went to the intended phone number or email. The recipient may need to verify the destination or finish setting up an account. Some bank-funded personal payments typically take three to five business days to process; Venmo’s FAQ says certain bank-funded payments may take up to five business days. The timing depends on the payment and should not be treated as proof that a payment has failed. See Payments & Requests FAQ and My personal Venmo payment is ‘Pending’.
For a bank-link or verification problem
- Check the routing number and account number, and ask your bank whether the account supports ACH payments and has any restrictions or limits.
- If the bank connection was disrupted, remove the account and add it again. Venmo’s Bank Accounts & Cards FAQ covers linked accounts and cards.
- If you are verifying manually, wait for the verification deposits or debits to appear; Venmo says they can take one to three business days.
For a frozen account, identity prompt, or unresolved issue
If a failed bank payment froze your account, use the in-app “Restore your account” instructions or go to venmo.com/recover. Venmo says recovery using a bank account can take up to five business days. Do not treat an alternate payment source as a substitute for the recovery process. For identity prompts, follow the instructions in the app; for other account-specific problems, contact Venmo through its app or official contact page.

Contact Venmo safely
Reach support through the Venmo app or its official Contact Us page. That page lists general phone support at (855) 812-4430, daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central Time, as well as in-app messaging and its published hours. Confirm current contact options and hours on the page, since they can change. For a decision made by your bank or card issuer, contact that institution.
Venmo’s User Agreement, effective August 24, 2026, says reviews may delay, block, or cancel transfers and may result in holds or account limitations. It advises users to transact only with people they know and trust. Do not create another account, try to bypass a hold, or send another payment as a test.
