Alex Jones has not completed a sale of Infowars to pay the Sandy Hook families. The Onion’s proposed purchase was rejected by a bankruptcy judge in December 2024. As of the Associated Press’s August 2026 report, the families had not collected money from Jones, and enforcement proceedings were still unfolding. The often-repeated $1.5 billion figure is historical shorthand: AP reported that the Connecticut judgment stood at $1.25 billion and the Texas case at nearly $6 million after an appeal.
What happened to the proposed Infowars sale?
The Onion was selected as the winning bidder in a bankruptcy auction in late 2024, but that did not make it the owner of Infowars. In December, Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez rejected the proposed sale, citing a lack of transparency and confusion in the bidding, according to the Associated Press. Jones retained control of the platform at that time.
The distinction matters: a winning bid is not a completed purchase, and the available reporting does not establish that any sale proceeds went to the families. No independently sourced sale price or distribution of auction proceeds is established here.
How much do the families’ judgments stand at now?
The Sandy Hook families’ claims come from separate Connecticut and Texas cases. Their judgments have different amounts and appellate histories. The figures below reflect AP’s August 2026 reporting for the post-appeal status; the earlier amounts are from a 2025 bankruptcy-court filing reproduced by Midpage.

KUT’s August 2026 summary described $1.5 million as the amount between the two Texas plaintiffs. AP, by contrast, specified that $1.5 million was the reduced punitive-damages component and reported about $6 million remaining overall. These descriptions should not be treated as interchangeable: the $1.5 million figure is not the whole Texas case balance in AP’s account.
Why the $1.5 billion headline is no longer a precise total
The $1.5 billion figure reflects an earlier shorthand for the judgments, not AP’s latest reported post-appeal amounts. AP reported $1.25 billion in Connecticut and nearly $6 million in Texas in August 2026. The Texas appellate ruling changed the Texas award; it did not reduce or overturn the Connecticut judgment.

A judgment states what a court has ordered a defendant to pay. It does not show that the money has been collected. AP reported that the families had received no money from Jones as of its August 2026 report, so the judgments should not be described as funds already paid to them.

Bankruptcy and the rejected auction
In June 2024, the bankruptcy court converted Jones’s personal case to Chapter 7 and dismissed the separate bankruptcy case for Free Speech Systems, the company associated with Infowars. The later auction process did not end with a sale: the judge rejected The Onion’s proposed purchase in December 2024.

The sale-purpose order
A bankruptcy-court filing recounting a February 5, 2025 hearing says the judge explained that an earlier supplemental order had served its purpose of authorizing a sale, but that no sale was proceeding. The filing quotes Judge Lopez: “you can consider any use of the supplemental order null and void, because the purpose for which it served was the auction of the assets, and we’re not doing that anymore”. The filing also quotes him saying the bankruptcy itself did not impose an automatic stay preventing others from exercising whatever rights they had. This is an account of the hearing in a dated filing, not a live update to the court docket.
Receivership and continued enforcement
In August 2025, a Texas state court appointed a receiver over Free Speech Systems assets for the Connecticut families, according to the same filing. The order was temporarily stayed on appeal. A receivership is an asset-control and enforcement step; it does not mean Infowars had been sold or that the families had collected the judgments.

By AP’s August 2026 report, Jones had left Infowars and was broadcasting on other websites. That change in where he broadcast did not itself establish that the families had been paid or that the judgments had been satisfied.
