The dispute matters because Airbus says engine availability is affecting its production ramp, but a contractual dispute, a reported damages pursuit and a court case are distinct stages.
Has Airbus actually sued Pratt & Whitney?
There is no confirmed court filing in the available reporting. At its February 2026 annual press conference, Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury said the company had initiated a process specified by its contract with Pratt & Whitney to address the disagreement. He said Airbus wanted to enforce its contractual rights. That is an official statement about a contract dispute process, not an announcement that a lawsuit had been filed. In March, Reuters reported that Airbus was pursuing potential damages over late engine shipments, citing two people familiar with the matter. The report indicates that compensation was under consideration or pursuit, but it does not establish a public court claim, the amount sought or a judicial finding. Reuters, March 2026.
By July, Reuters described Airbus’s public position as more conciliatory. Faury said the dispute was “no longer a topic for 2026,” and Airbus said it hoped Pratt would fulfil its commitments for 2027. What each side has said about the dispute
Airbus’s account
Airbus said Pratt had not committed to the number of engines ordered and had resiled from accepted 2026 volumes. Faury characterized that as a failure to meet contractual obligations and said engine availability was affecting Airbus’s 2026 guidance and production ramp. These are Airbus’s allegations about the supply relationship, not findings by a court or an independent adjudicator. At the February press conference, Faury said: “We have a contract, obviously, with our friends from Pratt & Whitney, and we see that they are not respecting their contractual obligations. What Reuters reported
Reuters’s March report added the potential-damages angle, based on two unnamed people familiar with the matter. Its July report then described Airbus as seeking more Pratt engines for 2027 and wanting to resolve the dispute constructively. Neither report establishes a filed lawsuit or a quantified damages claim.

What RTX disclosed about engine maintenance
RTX, Pratt & Whitney’s parent, disclosed that a rare condition in powder metal used in certain engine parts required accelerated inspections and removals of PW1100G-JM GTF engines from service. The PW1100G-JM powers the A320neo family. RTX said the issue led to additional shop visits, elevated aircraft-on-ground levels and related costs. This filing documents a maintenance burden; it does not verify Airbus’s contractual allegations or establish that the powder-metal issue alone caused the production shortfall. Why engine availability affects A320 production
Airbus’s explanation is that Pratt faces competing demands: supplying engines for new aircraft while inspecting, repairing and retrofitting engines already in service. Faury cited parts bottlenecks and constraints in maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capacity, in the campaign linked to the powder-metal issue and engine durability. That account connects the maintenance burden to new-engine availability, but the public information here does not assign a precise share of the delays to each cause.

The stakes are large in production terms. Airbus reported 607 A320-family deliveries in 2025 and a year-end A320-family backlog of 7,163 aircraft. It said engine availability was affecting its ramp and set a target of 70–75 A320-family aircraft per month by the end of 2027, stabilizing at 75 per month thereafter. The distinction between deliveries, backlog and production rate is important: a large backlog shows demand awaiting delivery, while a monthly target describes a planned manufacturing pace. Neither figure by itself measures how many aircraft were delayed specifically by Pratt’s engines.

What changed by July 2026—and what did not
At Farnborough in July, Airbus was still seeking more Pratt engines for 2027. Reuters reported that Airbus Commercial’s chief expected the protracted supply problems to be resolved by 2028; that is a forecast, not a confirmed schedule. Reuters also reported Pratt’s position that maintenance disruption, which had reduced engines available for new-aircraft production, was easing. Reuters, July 29, 2026.
Pratt has also continued to announce GTF milestones and orders. The company said EASA certified the GTF Advantage-powered A320neo family aircraft in April 2026, following FAA certification in February 2025 and EASA validation in October 2025. Pratt said the milestone prepared the way for production-engine deliveries and entry into service. Certification establishes regulatory progress, not that the Airbus supply disagreement is resolved. In July, Pratt announced that British Airways selected GTF engines for 33 firm and 30 option A320neo aircraft, with deliveries expected from 2027.
