Japan’s Imperial Household Agency says Imperial Household property belongs to the State; its published budget figures describe public household spending, not Akihito’s individual assets or liabilities.
Is Akihito’s net worth publicly known?
No substantiated personal net-worth figure is provided in the sources cited here. Net worth would require a reliable accounting of an individual’s assets and liabilities. The Imperial Household Agency’s published finance information does not provide that kind of personal balance sheet, so a precise yen or dollar estimate cannot be supported from those figures.
Akihito is Japan’s 125th Emperor and now holds the title Emperor Emeritus. The Imperial Household Agency records his accession on January 7, 1989, and his abdication on April 30, 2019. The Agency’s biography also quotes the Constitution’s description of the emperor as “the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people.” The Associated Press used the title Emperor Emeritus following the 2019 handover to his son, Emperor Naruhito. Why the Imperial Household budget is not Akihito’s personal wealth
The Agency’s finance page states: “All property of the Imperial Household belongs to the State.” It explains that expenses are appropriated in the Diet’s budget and separates categories for personal expenses, Imperial Family member allowances, and palace-related costs.

#1 Best Overall
For FY2026, the Agency reports the following amounts. They are public or household spending categories, not estimates of Akihito’s net worth.
| FY2026 category | Published amount | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Personal expenses | 324 million yen | Expenses for the Emperor, Emperor Emeritus and inner-court members |
| Allowances for Imperial Family members | 255 million yen | Total allowance in the stated category |
| Palace-related expenses | 12 billion yen | Official duties and facility management and maintenance |
These categories have different purposes and recipients. Adding them together would not produce an individual wealth figure: the totals describe budgeted spending, not property owned by Akihito, and do not account for personal liabilities.

How state property and succession rules affect estimates
The Agency also describes statutory limits on gifts and says traditional property handed down with the Throne is inherited by the Imperial Heir at accession. Those institutional ownership and succession rules make it especially important not to treat palace facilities, household property, or public appropriations as Akihito’s privately owned assets.
An online estimate that does not identify individually owned assets, a valuation date, a method and supporting documents should not be treated as verified. In particular, citing the Imperial Household’s budget or property alone does not substantiate a personal net-worth claim.
