What is Air Canada’s Aeroplan program?
Aeroplan is Air Canada’s frequent flyer and rewards program. Members can earn Aeroplan points on eligible Air Canada and partner activity, as well as through other participating offers. Points can be used for flight rewards; the number required depends on the itinerary and award availability.
Keep two balances conceptually separate: points are used to book rewards, while Elite Status is a tier that can provide a higher points-earning multiplier on eligible Air Canada flights. Air Canada’s published earning rules describe the multiplier, but the information here does not establish the full 2026 status qualification thresholds or benefits. How do I earn Aeroplan points?
Eligible Air Canada flights from January 1, 2026
For eligible Air Canada flights departing on or after January 1, 2026, members earn one base Aeroplan point for each eligible dollar spent on base fare and carrier surcharges. Applicable taxes, fees, and third-party charges do not count toward this base calculation. Elite Status adds a multiplier: Air Canada’s table lists total earning rates of 2 points per eligible dollar for 25K, 3 for 35K, 4 for 50K, 5 for 75K, and 6 for Super Elite. The applicable tier is the member’s status at the time of travel. These are total rates, not extra points on top of the listed base rate. Air Canada’s earning rules explain the change.

For travel on or before December 31, 2025, the previous Air Canada flight-earning approach was based on distance and fare option. The new spend-based rule applies to eligible departures beginning January 1, 2026; it should not be assumed to cover every partner flight.
Partner flights: check both the ticket and the operator
Partner-flight earning depends on two details: which airline issued the ticket and which airline operates the flight. Air Canada says its operated flights earn based on eligible spend regardless of ticket issuer. Partner-operated flights ticketed by Air Canada—identified by a ticket number beginning with 014—also use spend-based earning. Partner-operated flights ticketed by another airline generally earn based on distance flown, subject to stated exceptions. Review the earning terms for the specific itinerary rather than assuming all partner or Star Alliance flights earn alike.

Other ways to earn
Members may also earn through eligible non-flight offers. For example, American Express Canada lists an Aeroplan Card that earns points on eligible purchases, including direct Air Canada purchases and eligible Canadian dining or food-delivery purchases. Its listed first checked-bag benefit applies to the cardholder and up to eight companions on the same reservation when travel originates on an Air Canada flight. Card terms, fees, eligibility, and insurance conditions can change, so confirm current details with the issuer before applying. How many Aeroplan points do I need for a flight?
There is no single fixed price for every flight. Air Canada’s flight reward chart gives one-way estimates based on zone, distance band, cabin, and whether the flight is on Air Canada or a partner. Air Canada flight rewards are shown as ranges or starting amounts; partner amounts and eligible carriers vary by region. Award seats are subject to availability, high-demand itineraries may require more points, and taxes or third-party charges may still apply. Treat a chart figure as a planning guide, not a guaranteed quote for a particular flight.

As one scale example, the chart lists a one-way North America partner-operated flight in the 0–500-mile distance band at 6,000 points in economy or 15,000 points in business. Those figures apply to that chart category; itinerary, demand, seat availability, and applicable charges still affect what a member can actually book. The chart’s median figures are estimates based on member redemptions from January 2025 through December 2026, and medians are not supplied for every route. Compare the full cost, not just the points
Before choosing a reward over a cash fare, compare the cash price you would otherwise pay with the points required and any remaining charges. Include the same itinerary and cabin in the comparison, along with seat availability and any relevant change or flexibility costs. Air Canada says its own flight rewards do not add airline surcharges, though taxes and third-party fees may remain payable. Another airline’s flight reward carries a flat $39 partner booking fee per ticket on Air Canada’s redemption page; the fee can also be covered with points. Can I combine Aeroplan points with family?
Eligible, verified Aeroplan members can use Family Sharing to pool points in a shared balance without a transfer fee. A pool must have at least two members and can include up to eight. Members cannot choose to contribute only part of their balance: the pool combines their points. Air Canada says redemptions are taken proportionally from the pool, and a member with redemption privileges can book for anyone.
The Family Lead must be at least 18, verified, and an Aeroplan member for at least six months. Other members must also meet the program’s verification and membership conditions. Joining and leaving are subject to program rules and restrictions, so check the current requirements before changing pools. Air Canada’s Family Sharing page sets out the current terms.
