The airline reports investing more than $200 million in the three-floor, 664,629-square-foot facility, where pilots, flight attendants, customer-service agents and other employees train using flight simulators, aircraft mock-ups and role-specific practice spaces.
What is inside Alaska Airlines’ Renton training center?
The center brings together training spaces for several frontline workgroups. Alaska Airlines says 550 employees from 14 workgroups work in the building, while thousands more cycle through for regular training. The airline describes the facility as a shared training home for Alaska and Hawaiian employees, not a replacement for every existing location: Honolulu training facilities continue to augment the Renton center.
| Facility feature | What Alaska says it is used for |
|---|---|
| 10 full-motion flight simulators: one 787 and nine 737 simulators | Pilot training for the airline’s 787 and 737 fleets |
| Five inflight mock bays | Flight-attendant practice for emergency aircraft scenarios |
| Functional aircraft galley | Service-procedure training |
| Four aircraft-door trainers | Practice with normal, abnormal and emergency procedures |
| Mock lobby and gate area | Customer-service agent training |
| Three virtual-reality training rooms | VR-based training; the airline does not specify further applications in its opening announcement |
Alaska’s published inventory also lists 89 classrooms, nine break rooms and 34 conference rooms. It describes the campus design as drawing on Pacific Northwest landscapes, with wood elements and colors intended to evoke mountains, oceans and forest canopy. The airline says the renovation reused a significant amount of existing material to limit landfill waste, but did not publish a quantified waste reduction.
How much did Alaska Airlines spend on the center?
Alaska Airlines reported a total investment of more than $200 million when it announced the center’s opening in January 2026. That is the airline’s stated total, not an independently audited project account.

In May 2024, Alaska said it had purchased the 19-acre property from Unico Properties for $85.75 million and planned to spend an additional $100 million on renovation. Those earlier figures describe the purchase and the renovation plan announced at the time; they should not be treated as a precise accounting reconciliation of the later, more-than-$200-million total.
How did the project change from the 2024 plan to the opening?
| Published detail | 2024 announcement | 2026 opening announcement |
|---|---|---|
| Investment | $85.75 million property purchase and a planned additional $100 million renovation investment, as announced by Alaska Airlines in May 2024 | More than $200 million total investment, as reported by Alaska Airlines in January 2026 |
| Building area | 600,000 square feet, a rounded figure in Alaska’s May 2024 announcement | 664,629 square feet across three floors, in Alaska’s January 2026 announcement |
| Training consolidation | Alaska said other employee groups would begin moving in after renovations toward the end of 2025 | The center officially opened January 30, 2026, with training spaces and equipment listed for multiple workgroups |
The City of Renton described the facility in February 2026 as 660,000 square feet on a 19-acre property. That rounded municipal figure is close to, but not the same precision as, Alaska’s exact opening-announcement area. The 19 acres refer to the property, not the building’s floor area.

Where is the Global Training Center?
The center is in Renton, Washington, near the Longacres campus and roughly five miles from Alaska Airlines’ headquarters, according to the airline. The City of Renton identifies the address as 1301 SW 16th St. Alaska’s 2024 announcement placed the property within the broader Longacres campus plan, which included plans for an arts and entertainment district, walking and jogging trails, ponds, wetlands and access to the Renton/Tukwila Sound Transit station. Those are campus-context details, not amenities all located inside the training building.
For construction context, project contractor Balfour Beatty says renovation began in summer 2024 and reached substantial completion in September 2025. Its February 2026 completion notice identifies Howard S. Wright, a Balfour Beatty company, as general contractor, with Alaska Airlines, Seneca Group and NBBJ as project partners.
