Amazon’s September 2024 plan to require corporate and tech employees to work in the office five days a week drew sharply different reactions: downtown Seattle leaders and some local businesses welcomed the expected foot traffic, while employees and a former worker objected to losing flexibility. The policy was scheduled to begin January 2, 2025; the available reporting does not establish whether it remained unchanged as of October 2026.
What Amazon announced
On September 16, 2024, CEO Andy Jassy told Amazon corporate and tech employees to return to the office five days a week beginning January 2, 2025, replacing the prior three-day requirement. The announcement described exceptions for extenuating circumstances and employees with approved remote-work arrangements. GeekWire’s report on the announcement also said Amazon planned to restore assigned desks in offices where employees had dedicated desks before the pandemic.
Jassy’s memo allowed for occasional remote work in situations such as illness, a home emergency, customer or partner travel, or work requiring isolation. It did not treat two work-from-home days each week as the default.
Why Amazon said it wanted employees in the office
Amazon presented the change as a way to strengthen collaboration, brainstorming, teaching, learning and invention, and to help the company operate “like the world’s largest startup.” Jassy said the previous 15 months under the three-day policy had “strengthened our conviction about the benefits.” Those statements explain the company’s rationale; they do not independently establish that five-day attendance improves productivity or innovation. GeekWire reported Jassy’s explanation.

Why some in Seattle called it a “home run”
For downtown businesses and civic leaders, more Amazon employees in offices could mean more customers nearby. Jon Scholes, president and CEO of the Downtown Seattle Association, called the move a potential win: “Downtown’s largest employer bringing people back more frequently is a home run for downtown.” A worker at Ba Bar also expected more business, particularly on Mondays and Fridays. These were individual expectations, not evidence that the policy produced a measurable increase in sales. GeekWire’s report on local reactions quoted both.
The broader downtown context showed a recovery that was still incomplete. Downtown Seattle Association data, reported by GeekWire, counted more than 90,000 downtown workers per weekday in August 2024—62% of the traffic measured in July 2019. That count covered downtown workers generally, not Amazon employees alone. GeekWire reported the August figure.

GeekWire also relayed Flex Index figures saying 79% of tech companies offered flexible-work policies and 3% required full-time office work. The year for those figures was not specified in the cited passage, and they provide background rather than a direct measure of Amazon’s employees or the effect of its decision. The report gives that context.
Why employees and a former worker objected
The policy’s critics focused on the loss of choice and the practical costs of attending five days, including commuting. Former Amazon employee Pamela Hayter called the change unpopular and asked why five days were necessary, describing it as “cowardly.” An Amazon employee interviewed near the Spheres put his reaction more briefly: “It sucks.” He said Mondays and Fridays had been less crowded, making it easier to move around and get things done. GeekWire reported these reactions.

Those comments show how some people experienced or judged the decision; they are not a representative survey of Amazon workers. The reporting does not establish the policy’s effects on productivity, employee retention, commuting burdens, or downtown recovery.
What the opposing reactions actually measure
The disagreement reflects different priorities rather than a shared verdict. Scholes and the Ba Bar worker emphasized the prospect of more activity for downtown businesses. The employee and Hayter emphasized flexibility, commuting, and the value of quieter office days. Neither the quoted reactions nor the available figures prove what the policy ultimately did to business revenue or employee outcomes.

Is Amazon’s five-day policy still in effect?
The cited reporting documents a policy announced in 2024 and scheduled to start on January 2, 2025. It does not confirm whether Amazon’s policy remained unchanged through October 2026, so the announcement should not be treated as verified current policy. For the original terms and exceptions, see GeekWire’s coverage of Jassy’s announcement.
