Why Boeing St. Louis Workers Stayed on Strike After September 2025 Mediation

A four-hour September mediation did not settle the Boeing St. Louis labor dispute. The union’s proposal and Boeing’s later accepted offer were different; the strike ended after members approved Boeing’s offer in November 2025.

The September 9, 2025, mediation between Boeing and striking IAM District 837 workers lasted four hours but did not produce a settlement. The workers remained on strike because neither side had accepted a deal: a union-backed proposal later won members’ approval, but Boeing had not agreed to it. The strike ended only after members approved Boeing’s separate offer on November 13.

What happened at the September mediation?

About 3,200 IAM District 837 members at Boeing Defense facilities in the St. Louis region went on strike August 4, 2025. The affected sites were in St. Louis and St. Charles, Missouri, and Mascoutah, Illinois. A September 9 St. Louis Business Journal report described a four-hour mediation session and said the union president shared details from behind closed doors. The report preview does not establish what was said in the session, so its private discussions cannot be reliably recounted.

The session did not resolve the dispute. “Unsuccessful” here means no settlement resulted; the available reporting identifies no formal finding by a mediator, court, or government agency about the session.

Why did the strike continue after the union’s vote?

On September 19, IAM District 837 announced that members had ratified the union’s proposed four-year settlement, but said they would remain on strike until Boeing accepted it. The union said its proposal addressed 401(k) contributions, pay for top-of-scale employees, and the ratification bonus. Its directing business representative, Tom Boelling, said members were ready to return once Boeing accepted the agreement. The union’s announcement made the key distinction clear: a vote by members for a union proposal was not the same as an agreement with Boeing.

The parties therefore resumed negotiations rather than treating the union vote as a contract. On September 26, Boeing and IAM District 837 jointly announced that they would restart talks with a federal mediator the following Monday. By then, the strike had lasted 53 days, according to the Missouri Independent.

Who called the proposal or mediation a “waste of time”?

The phrase was used in two distinct contexts. On September 16, Boeing executive Dan Gillian criticized the union’s proposed settlement vote, calling it “a publicity stunt” and “a waste of time” that would not help the parties reach a deal, Reuters reported. His comment was about the union’s vote, not a formal verdict on the September 9 mediation. Separately, a contemporaneous St. Louis Business Journal headline characterized the union as calling the mediation session a waste of time. These are attributed characterizations by the parties and reporting—not an objective finding about the session. Reuters’ September 16 report covers Gillian’s statement.

How did the final contract differ from the September proposal?

The September union proposal and the offer eventually accepted were separate proposals. The union’s proposal sought a $10,000 ratification bonus and improved retirement contributions. Boeing’s later offer, accepted in November, included a $6,000 signing bonus and a five-year general wage increase of 24%: 8% in the first year and 4% in each of the next four years. The Missouri Independent reported that the final contract did not include the union’s sought 401(k) benefit match or higher wage increases for longtime employees.

When did the strike end?

On November 13, IAM District 837 members ratified Boeing’s later contract offer, ending the strike; employees were scheduled to begin returning to work November 16. The Missouri Independent reported that 68% approved the offer and that it followed four earlier rejected Boeing offers. IAM said members had stood united for more than three months. IAM’s November 13 announcement reported the ratification and return schedule.
