Looking back at 2024, the most useful healthcare marketing ideas were not isolated campaigns but connected ways to help people understand, find, and access care. This retrospective covers nine practical strategy areas—not a ranking or a promise of results. The evidence is U.S.-focused, and privacy, licensing, coverage, and consent requirements can vary.

1. Coordinate marketing across channels

Build a consistent experience across your website, search visibility, social media, email, and paid outreach. Start with a defined audience and make sure each channel presents the same accurate service information. A 2024 healthcare trend paper describes these channels as connected parts of digital marketing; it does not establish that a particular mix guarantees results. 2. Publish useful health education

Use articles, short videos, and social posts to explain services, answer common questions, and share timely health information. Social channels can also direct people to fuller explanations on a provider’s website and communicate service or appointment details. Keep education distinct from unsupported medical claims or promotional language that could mislead patients. Advance Healthcare Marketing’s 2024 trends paper

3. Make the digital front door easier to use

A prospective patient should be able to find relevant services, understand what to do next, and reach a scheduling route without needless friction. Review navigation and patient-facing pathways, and keep service details current. Provider conference materials featured digital front doors and centralized access as operational themes; those examples are not proof that every implementation produces the same outcome. 4. Market telehealth around access and convenience

Explain which services are available remotely, how a visit works, and what patients need to participate. HHS recommends using digital outreach such as social media and email, as well as community partnerships, and advises providers to teach patients how to use the service. Define what the telehealth program is meant to accomplish and evaluate it against those objectives. Cross-state practice may raise state licensing issues. 5. Personalize communications without treating health data as ad inventory

Relevant, tailored communication may help people navigate services, but patient information is not an unrestricted targeting resource. Under HIPAA, covered entities generally need an individual’s written authorization to use or disclose protected health information (PHI) for marketing, subject to limited exceptions. HHS defines marketing under the Privacy Rule as “a communication about a product or service that encourages recipients of the communication to purchase or use the product or service.” Check how information moves through vendors and campaigns, and ensure privacy statements accurately describe actual practices. Health information can include data that allows an inference about someone’s health. FTC guidance recommends considering data flows, safeguards, retention, and whether consumer-facing privacy claims are clear and true. Some health apps and similar technologies outside HIPAA may be covered by the FTC Health Breach Notification Rule; the FTC says unauthorized disclosures can fall within its breach definition. Do not claim a service is “HIPAA Certified” without a legitimate basis—FTC guidance cautions against unsupported claims of that kind. 6. Use automation and AI with human oversight

Automation may support workflows such as lead qualification, content drafting, or appointment scheduling. A 2024 industry outlook recommended these kinds of applications, but that recommendation is not proof of clinical or commercial effectiveness. Keep people responsible for reviewing important communications and decisions. Do not enter identifiable health information into a tool unless its privacy and security arrangements have been appropriately reviewed. 7. Build professional and community referral relationships

Make it easy for clinicians, community health workers, community organizations, and other health professionals to understand whom you serve and how to refer someone. For telehealth outreach, HHS identifies community partnerships and referral programs as possible approaches. Coordinate referral information so people receive a clear next step rather than conflicting instructions. HHS guidance on developing a direct-to-consumer telehealth strategy

8. Explain provider value clearly and earn trust

Describe a provider’s expertise, service scope, access options, and costs in plain language. Trust and differentiated value were emphasized in a 2024 industry outlook, but that is industry commentary rather than evidence of a guaranteed result. Health-plan marketers should take particular care not to misstate coverage, benefits, costs, or incentives. In December 2024, FTC staff said they sent warning letters to 21 companies about potentially deceptive health-plan marketing claims; the release said the letters did not allege wrongdoing by each recipient. An FTC official stressed that honest descriptions matter to consumers’ health and financial well-being. 9. Set objectives and measure outcomes

Choose measures that reflect the service and the goal instead of relying on one universal marketing score. For telehealth programs, HHS gives examples such as new-patient counts, successful visits, and patient surveys, with regular review against program objectives. A practical comparison of tactics should account for:

  • the audience and service being promoted
  • ease of access and operational capacity
  • privacy and consent requirements
  • referral pathways
  • the outcomes the organization can reliably measure

How to choose what to prioritize

Start with the barrier you need to address. If people cannot find or understand a service, improve the website and service information first. If they are unaware of remote care, explain how telehealth works and use relevant digital or community channels. If outreach depends on personal data, map the data flow and review privacy obligations before personalizing. Then define a measurable objective and check whether staffing and referral processes can support the demand a campaign creates.

These strategy areas are complementary, not interchangeable. A stronger social presence cannot fix confusing scheduling, and automation cannot substitute for accurate service details or appropriate privacy controls. U.S. providers should also account for state-specific rules affecting privacy, consent, telehealth licensure, and coverage.
