Aldi keeps grocery prices down by simplifying how it selects, sources, displays and sells food. Its smaller assortment and streamlined store operations can reduce complexity, but they also mean fewer brands and services than a full-line supermarket. The evidence below combines Aldi U.S. statements with Aldi Australia’s explanation of its own practices; Australian figures and procedures should not be assumed to apply in the United States.
1. Aldi stocks a narrower range
Fewer products mean fewer items to buy, store, move through the supply chain and fit onto shelves. In an Australian submission to the ACCC, Aldi said it stocked about 1,800 products, compared with around 25,000 at full-line supermarkets. Those figures describe Australia, not U.S. stores.
At an ACCC hearing on 11 November 2024, Aldi Australia executive Mark Lack explained the trade-off: “increasing the range requires bigger stores, it requires more handling through the supply chain, and we understand that every one of those decisions we would take adds cost.” A tighter range helps simplify operations, though it also means Aldi may not have every brand or item a shopper wants. 2. Smaller stores take less to operate
Aldi U.S. identifies smaller stores as part of its cost-conscious model. A more limited range also makes a smaller footprint practical: Aldi Australia told the ACCC that expanding the range requires bigger stores. 4. Shelf-ready packaging simplifies replenishment
Aldi Australia lists shelf-ready packaging among the practices in its cost-effective operating model. Packaging designed to move from delivery to display can make replenishment more straightforward. This is an Australian description of Aldi’s approach; the source does not quantify the savings or establish how widely the practice is used in the United States. 5. Exclusive brands make up most of Aldi U.S.’s range
ALDI U.S. said in a 2025 packaging announcement that more than 90% of its products are private label. Exclusive or store brands give a retailer more control over its assortment than relying entirely on national brands. Separately, Aldi Australia told the ACCC that it sources exclusive brands directly from manufacturers rather than paying brand licences. 6. A lean buying structure reduces supplier complexity
Aldi Australia says each supplier has one point of contact and works directly with a small team of buyers. Fewer layers and a clear contact point can simplify routine supplier dealings. 7. Aldi Australia describes one consolidated supplier rate
In its ACCC submission, Aldi Australia said it does not offer cooperative marketing and agrees one rate intended to cover costs, rather than charging separately for marketing, shelf space or promotions. This describes Aldi Australia’s stated supplier practice; it does not establish a comparable policy in the United States or independently measure its effect on shelf prices. 8. Checkout and trolley practices avoid extra tasks
Aldi Australia identifies efficient register processes and trolley tokens as elements of its operating model. Token-based trolleys help reduce the work of collecting and replacing them, according to Aldi’s submission. 9. Aldi focuses on groceries instead of adding services

What Aldi’s low-price model means for your grocery budget
The underlying strategy is operational simplicity: a narrower assortment, smaller stores, streamlined handling and fewer layers in some supplier processes. It can help explain how Aldi aims to keep costs down, but it does not prove that every Aldi item is cheaper than the equivalent at another store. To judge what you will save, compare the same products and package sizes at local stores; the sources cited here do not provide a current independent U.S. basket-price comparison.

ALDI U.S. also said in its 2025 packaging announcement, citing its 2025 ALDI Price Leadership Report, that a family of four saves nearly $4,000 a year on groceries.
