Elon Musk did not come up with the name Tesla, according to cofounder Martin Eberhard’s account. Eberhard said he proposed “Tesla Motors” to fellow cofounder Marc Tarpenning, who immediately bought the domain name. The company was incorporated before Musk invested in it.
Who came up with the name Tesla?
Eberhard recalled suggesting “Tesla Motors” to Tarpenning during a conversation over coffee. In a Berkeley interview with Tarpenning, Eberhard said: “I like to tell the story about when I came up with the idea for the name of Tesla, and I came to see you the next day or something for coffee. And I told you, what do you think of the name Tesla Motors? And you got on your laptop and immediately bought the domain name.” Tarpenning affirmed the story. In the interview, Eberhard described the domain purchase as the moment Tarpenning committed to starting the company.
Why is it called Tesla?
The name refers to Nikola Tesla, the inventor and electrical engineer. The founders’ interview establishes Eberhard’s role in proposing the name, but the available account does not spell out any broader branding criteria. It is safest to describe the choice as a namesake connection rather than attribute additional motives to the founders.
What was Elon Musk’s role?
The timeline separates the company’s name and formation from Musk’s involvement. An archived 2004 interview says Tesla Motors was incorporated in July 2003 and describes Musk’s subsequent investment. It supports the distinction that Eberhard’s naming account concerns the company’s founding period, while Musk joined later as an investor.

When was the naming conversation?
The Berkeley interview does not establish an exact date. Eberhard recalled seeing Tarpenning “the next day or something,” making the timing approximate; the July 2003 incorporation date does not pin down when the name was proposed or the domain was purchased.
