Air India’s New Boeing 787-9 Has Entered Service: What It Means for Expansion

Air India’s first new-build 787-9 began Mumbai–Frankfurt service in February 2026. It marks a start to a wider program of new Dreamliners and retrofits, not completion of the plan.

Air India’s first new-build Boeing 787-9, registered VT-AWA, arrived in Delhi in January 2026 and began scheduled Mumbai–Frankfurt service on February 1. The milestone is part of a broader fleet-renewal plan that pairs new aircraft with cabin retrofits—but one delivery does not mean the full order book, retrofit program, or any particular expansion target has been completed.

What happened—and when?

“Rolled out” can suggest a factory unveiling, but the more consequential milestones for passengers were delivery and entry into service. Air India said VT-AWA was its first line-fit 787-9: an aircraft configured for the airline, with its cabin installed on Boeing’s production line. It arrived in Delhi in January and began its first international long-haul service, Mumbai–Frankfurt, on February 1, 2026. Air India’s delivery announcement and route announcement describe those milestones.

In an update dated September 5, 2026, Air India identified VT-AWD as its fourth line-fit 787-9 delivered that year. The company described inspection work, test flights, and regulatory oversight before an aircraft enters service. That is a dated company count, not a live fleet inventory. Air India’s September feature explains the acceptance process.

What does the aircraft add for passengers?

Air India reported 296 seats across Business, Premium Economy, and Economy. The airline also described Bluetooth headphone pairing throughout the cabins, wireless charging in Business Class, and a Thales AVANT Up inflight-entertainment system. These are features described for the aircraft, not a guarantee that every Air India plane has the same cabin.

One detail was conditional at launch: Air India said the sliding privacy doors on the Business Class suites were not available for passenger use pending regulatory approval. The airline’s January announcement is the relevant reference for that qualification; do not assume the doors became operational without a later confirmation. How the 787-9 fits the fleet-renewal plan

The plan has two complementary parts: bringing new-build aircraft into the fleet and modernizing older widebodies already in it. Air India announced 19 additional production 787-9s alongside VT-AWA. Separately, it announced a retrofit program covering 26 legacy 787-8s. The new aircraft add aircraft to the fleet; retrofits return existing aircraft with updated cabins. They are not competing aircraft choices.

Path What Air India announced What it means
New-build 787-9s 19 additional production aircraft announced alongside the first line-fit 787-9 in 2026. New aircraft deliveries, subject to the delivery and entry-into-service timeline.
Legacy 787-8 retrofits 26 aircraft in the announced retrofit program. The first retrofitted aircraft, VT-ANT, was unveiled in April 2026. Existing aircraft receive refreshed cabins rather than adding an airframe to the fleet.

Air India described the first retrofitted 787-8 as having three cabins and new seats and entertainment equipment. It said the 787 retrofit program formed part of a US$400 million legacy-fleet investment and said 13 legacy 777-300ER aircraft were planned for retrofit afterward. These are company-announced program figures and plans; they do not establish that all aircraft have been upgraded. Air India’s April retrofit announcement.

It is one piece of a much larger expansion

The 787-9 program sits within a wider order and fleet-growth effort. In January 2026, Air India reported a 250-aircraft Boeing order book after adding 30 737s, with 198 Boeing aircraft then incoming. Boeing said the additional 737-8 and 737-10 order would support domestic and short-haul regional growth. Air India also reported that its group had added nearly 170 aircraft since privatisation through new deliveries, leases, the Vistara merger, and reactivation of grounded aircraft. These figures describe different categories and should not be added together or treated as current delivery totals.

The roles differ: the 787-9 is part of the long-haul widebody story, while the added 737s are intended to support domestic and regional flying. Air India has also announced a Boeing component-services agreement covering its existing 787 fleet and aircraft on order, an operational-support measure for the growing Dreamliner fleet—not another aircraft order. Air India’s January order announcement, Boeing’s statement on the 737 order, and Air India’s 787 component-services announcement set out the respective plans.

What the milestone does—and does not—show

VT-AWA demonstrates that Air India has begun receiving and operating its new line-fit 787-9s, while the 787-8 retrofit program shows a parallel effort to refresh existing aircraft. Air India’s September update put the number of line-fit 787-9 deliveries at four for 2026 as of that announcement. Future deliveries and retrofits remain distinct from completed milestones.
