What changed in Air France-KLM’s A350 order?
When Air France-KLM announced the order in 2023, it committed to 50 aircraft split between 39 A350-900s and 11 A350-1000s, with purchase rights for 40 more. Airbus’s June 2026 customer list records the 50 firm passenger aircraft as 47 A350-900s and three A350-1000s. Comparing the two reported splits indicates eight -1000 orders were converted to -900s; the sources do not state when the conversions were made or their terms. Air France-KLM’s 2023 announcement and Airbus’s customer list establish the original and current counts.

The comparison describes the net change between the reported order splits, not a separately announced transaction or a disclosed conversion schedule.
Why did the group switch to more A350-900s?
The reason for the variant change has not been stated in the reviewed public announcements. Air France-KLM said the original order supported long-haul fleet renewal and rationalization, with the aim of improving economic and environmental performance while replacing older Airbus A330s and Boeing 777s. It also described the order as flexible, so aircraft could be allocated among group airlines in response to market dynamics and local regulatory conditions. Those broad goals explain the order’s overall purpose, but they do not establish why eight -1000s became -900s.

Air France-KLM CEO Benjamin Smith called the 2023 purchase “a major step in the renewal of the Group’s fleet.” The statement was about the order as a whole, not the later variant conversion.
What does the current order count include?
The 47 -900s and three -1000s are the firm 50-aircraft passenger order reported on Airbus’s June 2026 customer list. In an October 2, 2026 update, Air France-KLM separately described a total order book of 99 A350 aircraft across passenger and freighter versions, with purchase rights for 40. The 99-aircraft figure is therefore not a replacement count for the 50-aircraft passenger order; the figures cover different scopes.

How the A350 fits into the group’s fleet plans
Air France-KLM presented the A350 order as part of its long-haul fleet renewal. KLM said in 2023 that its A350s were intended for intercontinental service and would replace Boeing 777-200ERs and Airbus A330-200/-300s. The group’s October 2026 update said it aimed to have up to 80% new-generation aircraft by 2030, compared with 38% in July 2026. These are company-reported figures and a target, not an independently verified forecast.
Air France-KLM also says the A350 offers 25% less fuel per passenger-kilometer and a 40% smaller noise footprint on its fleet-renewal page. Those are the company’s claims; the page does not provide a comparison basis in the cited material, so they should not be read as independently established results for every route or aircraft configuration.

KLM’s first A350-900: delivery and planned routes
KLM took delivery of its first A350-900 on October 2, 2026. Air France-KLM said the aircraft has 331 seats across three cabins: 34 in World Business Class, 26 in Premium Comfort and 271 in Economy. At the time of the October update, the first commercial flight from Amsterdam to Toronto was planned for the coming weeks. KLM’s planned destinations for the IATA Winter 2026 season also included Montreal, Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, Nairobi and Zanzibar; these were plans, not confirmation that those flights had begun. The order list shows Air France-KLM chose to hold many more -900s than -1000s in its firm passenger order. It does not disclose a route-by-route allocation, a financial rationale for the conversions, or a side-by-side comparison of the variants’ capacity, range, or operating costs. The group says aircraft allocation is flexible, so the order split alone does not establish which airline or route will receive each future aircraft.

For personal-finance readers, the important distinction is between an announced fleet commitment and an explanation of its economics: the public figures establish the revised mix and broader renewal program, but they do not quantify expected savings, passenger demand, or the financial impact of the conversion.
