How to get started in affiliate marketing: choose an audience, publish useful original content where that audience spends time, and recommend products or services through programs whose terms you understand. You may earn a commission when someone makes a qualifying purchase or takes another qualifying action through your link, but income is not guaranteed. This beginner’s guide explains the decisions and disclosure practices that matter; the cited Amazon policy details are current to the dates shown and should be checked again before you rely on them.

How affiliate marketing works

An affiliate marketer publishes content that helps an audience make a decision, then links to a relevant product or service through an affiliate program. The program uses a tagged link to attribute qualifying activity to the publisher and may pay a commission under its terms. What counts as qualifying, how links may be used, and the commission rate depend on the individual program.

This is a commercial relationship, not just a way to add links to a page. Readers should be able to recognize that you may benefit financially from a recommendation and weigh it accordingly. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains its U.S.-focused endorsement guidance in FTC’s Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking.

How to get started in affiliate marketing

1. Choose an audience and a useful subject

Start with a group of people and a set of questions you can help answer—not with a product you hope to sell. A defined audience makes it easier to judge whether a recommendation belongs in your content. Ask what decisions your readers face, what information would help them compare options, and whether you can keep producing material that is accurate and useful.

2. Pick a channel and a format you can sustain

Choose a channel where your intended audience already consumes content and where you can publish consistently. A website may suit detailed guides and comparisons; social content or video may better suit a format you can explain clearly there. These are examples, not a ranking: no single channel is established as best for every beginner.

Before settling on a channel, check whether prospective programs permit it and whether you can make disclosures conspicuous in that format. Programs set their own rules. Amazon’s agreement, for example, describes tagged Special Links on a website, social media user-generated content, an online software application, or an Alexa skill, subject to its agreement and policies. See the Amazon Associates Operating Agreement and Associates Program Participation Requirements for the current conditions.

3. Publish original material that helps someone decide

Create useful content before treating affiliate links as the point of the page. Explain how an option addresses the reader’s need, what trade-offs matter, and what alternatives or limitations a reader should consider. A recommendation can be useful without claiming that one product suits everyone.

Be accurate about your experience. Do not present a hands-on review if you have not tried the product, invent testing, or make unsupported performance claims. The FTC states, “You can’t talk about your experience with a product you haven’t tried” in Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers.

4. Evaluate programs before applying

Read each provider’s live terms before you build around its links. Check that your channel is eligible, which products or actions qualify, how commissions are determined, and what restrictions apply to link placement and promotion. Compare programs against your audience’s needs and your content—not just a headline commission rate. Fees, terms, support, and availability should be verified with the provider; this guide does not establish a universal best program.

Amazon Associates is one documented example, not a default choice. Its agreement describes how the program works and its participation requirements, but marketplace eligibility, commission terms, and policies are provider-specific and can change. Review the current agreement and participation requirements before signing up or publishing its links.

5. Apply when your channel and content are ready

Follow the chosen program’s current application process and provide accurate information about your channel. Approval is not guaranteed. Make sure the content and publishing setup you describe match what you actually operate, and do not assume that acceptance into one program grants permission to use another provider’s links or content.

6. Add relevant links and disclose commissions clearly

Place a link only where it supports the recommendation and is useful to the reader. Put a plain-language disclosure close to the relevant recommendation or link, rather than relying on an about page or a disclosure after a long article. FTC staff advises, “The closer the disclosure is to your recommendation, the better” in FTC’s Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking.

A straightforward example is: “I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.” The right disclosure depends on context, and this example is not a guarantee of compliance in every situation or jurisdiction. If you participate in Amazon Associates, Amazon requires the identification statement “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.” See Amazon’s associate disclosure help and its Operating Agreement.

7. Review results and keep content current

Use whatever reporting your program provides to see which links receive activity and whether readers appear to find the content useful. Do not mistake link activity for guaranteed income. Revisit older pages when product details, links, or program terms change, and remove or revise recommendations that are no longer accurate or relevant.

How to disclose affiliate links on social media and video

Disclosure needs to fit the medium and be hard to miss. On social posts, put clear disclosure with the endorsement itself, not somewhere a reader must search for it. For video, include the disclosure in the video rather than only in its description; consider spoken words and visible text so viewers who watch muted or miss an overlay can still understand it. In a live stream, repeat the disclosure as appropriate for viewers who join later. The FTC’s social media influencer guidance explains these principles for U.S. endorsements.

The FTC guidance is U.S.-focused. It notes that U.S. law may apply to foreign posts when effects on U.S. consumers are reasonably foreseeable, and other countries’ laws may also apply. The FTC’s Endorsement Guides are guidance about how Section 5 principles may apply, not themselves law; context matters. Check applicable rules for your location and audience rather than treating one sample sentence as universal legal advice.

What changed in Amazon Associates rules in 2026

Amazon’s published policy update took effect April 14, 2026. It includes a 180-day completion requirement for qualifying purchases, expanded exclusions for referrals from paid or boosted ads linking to Amazon, and an original-content definition requiring commentary, analysis, or transformation that adds value. These are Amazon program rules, not general affiliate-marketing requirements. Read the Amazon Associates policy update alongside the live agreement before acting on them; program terms may change.

What beginners should expect about earnings

There is no reliable beginner earnings figure or typical conversion rate established here. Amazon says, “We do not make any representation, warranty, or covenant regarding the amount of traffic or commission income you can expect at any time in connection with the Associates Program” in its Operating Agreement. More broadly, do not build a budget around an assumed payout or treat a published example as a forecast for your own channel. Results depend on the audience, content, program terms, and qualifying activity; none of the sources cited here establishes a typical outcome.

Beginner checklist

  • Choose an audience and a subject where your content can genuinely help.
  • Use a channel and content format you can sustain, and verify that each program permits it.
  • Publish original material that adds value and distinguishes facts from personal experience.
  • Check current eligibility, commission terms, and restrictions directly with each provider.
  • Use links only in relevant recommendations, with a clear disclosure nearby and in the right format.
  • Make truthful claims, avoid unsupported earnings promises, and review links and content on a schedule.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
