The platform’s original role was matching—not completing an adoption: legal services, screening, home studies, and other professional work remained separate.
How did Erin Quick start PairTree after struggling to adopt?
Quick and her husband pursued adoption after fertility challenges. In a 2021 interview with GeekWire, Quick described the process as fragmented and hard to navigate. “There’s no place to start. There’s no brand in adoption. There’s no clear route,” she said.
She founded PairTree to give prospective adoptive families and expectant mothers a way to find one another. The original service used a self-matching model: families created profiles and paid a monthly fee, while expectant mothers could use the platform without charge. Quick also emphasized that expectant mothers should have agency in choosing a family: “Expectant moms can be very selective in terms of who they’re choosing.”
What did PairTree do—and what did it not do?
PairTree’s original product was a connection tool, not an adoption agency or a substitute for professional services. GeekWire reported in 2021 that the platform did not provide adoption legal services or conduct adoptive-family screening; licensed social workers handled screening. The article also said PairTree used identity-verification software intended to deter people falsely posing as expectant mothers. Those are descriptions reported at the time, not confirmation of PairTree’s current practices or an independent security audit.

A match does not itself complete an adoption. Home studies, legal requirements, counseling or other professional support, and court procedures may be part of the process, depending on the circumstances and jurisdiction. California Courts, for example, describes independent adoption as a direct placement in which an agency is not involved in choosing the adoptive family. Its guide estimates that a California independent adoption usually takes 6–12 months, depending on how quickly the home study and paperwork are completed. That is California-specific guidance, not a national timeline or a PairTree result.
Rules also determine who may advise a birth parent. California’s Department of Social Services sets professional qualifications for an Adoption Service Provider advising a birth parent in an independent adoption. Anyone considering adoption should consult qualified professionals familiar with the applicable local law rather than treating a matching platform as legal or procedural guidance.
What did PairTree report about its early activity and price?
GeekWire’s February 26, 2021 profile reported company figures of 800 families seeking adoption, 175 expectant mothers on the site, and eight matches facilitated. It also reported a $75 monthly fee for families. These are dated snapshots, not current user totals, outcomes, or pricing.
In March 2022, GeekWire reported that PairTree had raised $5.1 million and was planning an online home study service. PairTree’s LinkedIn company profile describes a broader professional-software focus, including Connect Pro for collaboration among licensed professionals and Home Base for home study management. The available descriptions do not establish whether PairTree currently offers consumer matching, what it charges families, or where any family-facing service is available.

What should families check before using an adoption platform?
Compare services by their actual role, not by the broad label “adoption platform.” Before creating a profile or paying a fee, ask:
- What service is offered? Is it direct connection with expectant parents, home study management, access to a professional network, or licensed agency or legal services?
- Who handles screening and support? Confirm which licensed professionals are involved and what they do; do not assume a platform’s matching function includes a home study or legal representation.
- What safeguards are in place? Ask how identities and profiles are reviewed, what the platform does when someone raises a concern, and whether stated safety practices are current.
- Where does it operate? Confirm that the service is available in your jurisdiction and ask which local legal and professional requirements still apply.
- What does it cost now? Request current fees and terms directly. A price reported years ago is not a reliable quote today.
As one point of comparison, AdoptMatch’s current page describes a professional network and says families need a valid home study and an approved professional to post a profile. That is a different model from simply assuming every service provides the same combination of matching, screening, and legal support. In 2021, GeekWire also named Adoptimist, Adoption.com, and informal Facebook groups as alternatives; that historical list does not establish current availability or equivalent safeguards.

What is known—and not known—about PairTree today?
The public descriptions document PairTree’s origins as a family-to-expectant-mother matching platform and its later reported movement toward home study and professional workflow software. They do not establish current consumer availability, pricing, geographic coverage, matching outcomes, or present-day verification procedures. Families interested in the service should confirm those details directly and independently identify the licensed professionals and legal support required for their situation.
