Affirm’s instalment financing launched on Amazon.co.uk on 23 September 2026, as the UK’s new rules for a specific type of buy now, pay later (BNPL) credit were already in force. Eligible shoppers can apply at checkout for three interest-free monthly payments or a longer, interest-bearing plan. The rules, effective since 15 July 2026, cover deferred payment credit (DPC) as defined by the FCA—not every product marketed as BNPL.

What Affirm is offering on Amazon.co.uk

Affirm and Amazon announced the launch on 23 September 2026. The checkout option is being rolled out progressively to eligible Amazon.co.uk customers and applies to eligible purchases across most product categories, subject to exclusions. The announcement lists two options for baskets of at least £50:

Option Repayments and cost Eligibility and availability
0% Pay-in-3 Three interest-free monthly payments. Available on eligible baskets of at least £50, subject to approval and terms.
Longer-term instalments Advertised at 22% Representative APR fixed, for up to 48 months. The applicable offer and total amount repayable depend on the purchase and terms shown at checkout. Available on eligible baskets of at least £50, subject to approval and terms.

The longer plan’s representative APR is not the same as a quote for every customer or purchase. Review the payment schedule and total repayable presented before accepting an offer. Affirm says applications are made at checkout and receive an eligibility decision; its UK site says credit is subject to a credit check and minimum spend, and an upfront payment may be required.

What may be excluded

The launch announcement lists gift cards, grocery items, out-of-stock products and certain digital content among the exclusions. “Most product categories” does not mean every item qualifies, and availability depends on eligibility and the terms presented at checkout.

Missed payments and returns

Affirm says it does not charge late fees, but that does not make a missed payment consequence-free: its UK site says missed payments may affect a customer’s financial status. Amazon’s usual return and refund policies continue to apply, according to the launch announcement. That announcement also says purchases over £100 made using either new payment option are additionally covered by Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act; this is a product-specific statement from the announcement, not a general claim about all BNPL purchases.

What the UK BNPL regulatory overhaul covers

The FCA’s final rules were published on 11 February 2026, and covered DPC lending became a regulated activity on 15 July 2026. The FCA defines DPC as interest-free credit repayable in 12 or fewer instalments within 12 months. It brought third-party lenders financing purchases of goods or services from a merchant within this regulatory perimeter.

The category matters: the FCA says some other credit agreements marketed as BNPL were already regulated. The new DPC regime does not mean all BNPL products were previously unregulated or that every BNPL arrangement is now governed by identical rules. Merchants offering their own DPC directly, and firms broking DPC agreements, are outside this specific perimeter. The FCA’s policy statement sets out the scope and rules.

Protections for covered borrowers

Under the new rules, affected firms must give borrowers information to help them understand the risks, obligations, rights and protections associated with the credit. They must make proportionate checks so borrowing is affordable and support people approaching or experiencing financial difficulty. Consumers may complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service if something goes wrong. HM Treasury confirmed on 15 July 2026 that the regime had come into force and that providers must carry out affordability checks.

Affirm says Affirm UK Limited provides consumer-credit products and is authorised and regulated by the FCA for regulated consumer-credit activities (firm reference number 756087). That statement alone does not establish whether each individual Affirm product falls within the new DPC category; the product’s terms and legal classification matter.

Why the changes matter to shoppers

The FCA reported that UK DPC lending rose from £0.06 billion in 2017 to more than £13 billion in 2024. Separately, 10.9 million UK adults—20% of consumers—said they had used BNPL during the 12 months leading up to May 2024, according to the FCA’s 2024 Financial Lives Survey. These are historical measures, not estimates of lending or usage in 2026.

FCA Director of Consumer Finance Alison Walters wrote on 25 June 2026: “We don’t want to reduce or remove access to credit, but to ensure it is offered in a way that works for consumers.” The rules aim to make covered credit clearer and more affordable, while preserving access for borrowers who can manage repayments.

How to assess an instalment offer

Before choosing a checkout credit plan, compare the terms that determine its actual cost and risk—not just whether the first payment appears manageable:

  • Repayment schedule: note the number of instalments, their amounts and due dates, including any upfront payment.
  • Eligibility and minimum spend: check whether the basket qualifies and whether a credit check or approval is required.

  • Availability and exclusions: confirm that the merchant and the specific items are eligible.
  • Regulatory category and complaints: identify whether the agreement is covered by DPC rules or another regulated-credit framework, and what complaint route applies.

The launch announcement describes Amazon.co.uk as the channel for this UK launch and gives no timetable for expansion to other merchants. Wider availability should not be assumed.
