In December 2002, a House of Commons debate reported that APW Enclosures planned to close its Scottish plant at Hamilton, with 300 job losses. The parliamentary record documents an announcement—not proof that the plant later closed or that 300 redundancies ultimately took place.

What APW announced in 2002

During a Westminster Hall debate on 10 December 2002, the parliamentary record stated: “Last week, APW Enclosures announced a plan to close its Scottish plant at Hamilton, with the loss of a further 300 jobs.” The debate record is the contemporaneous source for both the planned closure and the reported job losses. It does not identify the speaker in the accessible record excerpt.

What “300 jobs” means

The figure of 300 is the number of job losses reported in the 2002 parliamentary debate in connection with the proposed Hamilton closure. It is not a verified final redundancy count, an audited company total, or evidence of how many workers were ultimately affected.

What the available records do not establish

  • Whether APW completed the planned closure or when production, if any, stopped.
  • The final number of redundancies, or what happened to the Hamilton site.
  • Whether production moved elsewhere, why APW proposed the closure, or how affected workers experienced it.

A Companies House charge record shows a standard security created on 16 May 2002 and delivered on 31 July 2002 concerning APW Enclosure Systems (UK) Limited’s tenant interest in a Scottish lease. The filing does not identify the property as the Hamilton factory and does not confirm the reported closure or the company’s later operations.
