Johnny Depp’s much-discussed “French village” is a private estate in Plan-de-la-Tour, near Saint-Tropez—not a public village and not a property shown to have sold for $55 million. Reports describe a roughly 15-hectare hamlet-like compound with a main house, guest buildings and leisure spaces. The $55 million figure was a historical asking price; reported prices changed across listing rounds, and the available reporting does not establish a current value, present ownership or a completed sale.
Where is Johnny Depp’s French village?
The estate is in Plan-de-la-Tour, a commune in France’s Var department, near Saint-Tropez. It is not in Saint-Tropez itself. The “village” label refers to a private property made up of multiple buildings, rather than a public settlement. The Los Angeles Times reported on the estate in 2015, while Le Parisien located it in Plan-de-la-Tour in 2020.
What is inside the private estate?
Accounts portray a secluded compound designed more like a small hamlet than a single mansion. The descriptions vary by publication and date, so the reported building counts and floor areas should not be treated as a definitive inventory.
Main house and guest buildings
The 2015 Los Angeles Times account described a 37-acre property with more than a dozen buildings, including a main house, guest cottages and a staff house. Later coverage describes a main residence and guest houses on a property of about 15 hectares. AD Magazine France’s July 2024 account gives the approximate 15-hectare figure; the two acreage descriptions are reported figures from different sources, not independently verified measurements.

Chapel, restaurant and cellar
Reported features include a former chapel, a restaurant and a wine cellar. In its 2015 description, the Los Angeles Times also mentioned a bar, workshop and garage. These details help explain the “village” nickname: the estate reportedly combines residential buildings with spaces for dining, storage and other uses.
Pools and recreation
Later descriptions mention two swimming pools and a skate area. These are reported amenities, not evidence that the property is open to visitors or operates as a public attraction.
Why is it called a $55 million estate?
$55 million is a reported historical asking price, not a verified sale price, appraisal or current valuation. Outlets documented different asks in different listing rounds, and the quoted prices should not be read as directly comparable valuations.
| Reporting | Reported asking price | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles Times, 2015 | Close to $26 million | A reported asking price in that listing round; the article also said more than $10 million had been spent on improvements. |
| Le Parisien, 2020 | Earlier ask of €23 million and a later €50 million ask; the report also cited a subsequent $15 million ask | A history of changing reported listing prices, not a record of a completed transaction. |
| TF1 Info, date not established in the retrieved page result | $55 million, reported as €50 million | A historical asking price relayed by TF1, citing the Wall Street Journal—not a confirmed sale or current value. |
The accounts do not establish why the asking price changed, and a listing figure alone cannot show what a buyer ultimately paid. The reported acreage, floor areas and prices are not presented as independently verified measurements or appraisals.

Did Johnny Depp sell the French estate?
The available reporting does not confirm a completed sale or establish who owns the property now. AD Magazine France wrote in July 2024 that the sale and ownership status remained unknown. A 2026 article hosted by Paris Ouest Sotheby’s International Realty described the estate as unsold and on the market for several years; that is agency-hosted reporting, not confirmation from a land registry or a documented transaction.
The same 2026 article described the property as exceeding 15 hectares and put the main house at 400 square metres. Those are that article’s reported specifications, not verified measurements. Read the Paris Ouest Sotheby’s International Realty article.

What the headlines leave out
“Johnny Depp’s $55 million French village” compresses several distinct facts into one phrase: a private estate near Saint-Tropez, a hamlet-like group of buildings, and an asking price reported during an earlier marketing round. It does not mean the estate was sold for $55 million, that it is currently listed at that price, or that its present market value is known.
For a property story, the distinction matters: an asking price is a seller’s stated offer at a particular moment. Without a verified sale record, it cannot be treated as the amount paid or as a reliable measure of current value.
