Tom Clark ranked No. 18 in CIO50 2016 for technology leadership at Corporate Travel Management (CTM). His central project was Lightning: a corporate booking platform that paired an online booking engine with mobile booking for flights, accommodation and car hire, while keeping reservations connected to company accounts, travel policies and approval processes. The recognition and product details are historical; the cited sources do not establish Clark’s current role or Lightning’s present availability.
Why Tom Clark appeared at No. 18 in CIO50 2016
CIO’s 25 November 2016 profile identified Clark as No. 18 in its CIO50 list. CIO’s award listing recorded his title as “Global chief technology and marketing officer” at CTM, while the profile called him CTO and CTM’s announcement used “Chief Technology Officer.” Those are contemporaneous source-specific formulations, not evidence of a current title.
The profile framed Clark’s challenge as a divide between polished consumer travel apps and the more constrained experience available to corporate travelers. A business traveler needed to book conveniently, but the employer also needed reservations to comply with policy, approvals and cost controls. Clark described the gap this way: “While there were apps and mobile-optimised websites that delivered flight bookings or travel updates, we found there was no mobile-focused technology that was universally available to our clients, that would provide an end-to-end travel experience.”
What CTM’s Lightning platform was designed to do
Lightning combined CTM’s corporate booking engine with a native mobile booking application for iOS and Android. CTM described the system as supporting end-to-end bookings for flights, accommodation and car hire from a mobile device, with the booking tied to a company account and subject to that company’s policy and approval requirements. Clark called it “one of the first corporate booking tools in Australia” to offer complete packages through mobile. This was CTM’s 2016 description, not an independent market-wide comparison.

The point was not simply to move a desktop booking page onto a phone. CTM said the mobile experience reflected its desktop tools and connected client requirements with CTM staff and back-end systems. In practical terms, mobile access was meant to make it easier for a traveler to arrange a trip while preserving the administrative controls that make business travel different from personal booking.
- For travelers: book flights, accommodation and car hire in one mobile journey rather than relying on disconnected apps or calls for assistance.
- For employers: apply corporate travel rules and approval steps to bookings made on mobile.
- For CTM: connect traveler activity with service staff and booking systems, supporting assistance and travel management.
Why mobile mattered for business travel
CTM’s July 2016 app announcement positioned mobile booking as a response to travelers whose plans could change outside office hours. The company cited its own research: more than two-thirds of its corporate clients had needed a last-minute business-related travel change in the preceding 12 months; 28 per cent had needed a change for personal reasons; and more than 13 per cent had needed one because of a natural disaster or other emergency. These are CTM-reported historical figures, not independently audited estimates.

The same announcement emphasized balancing convenience with policy. As Clark put it, “Today’s business travellers make plans on the fly, at any time of day, and on any device. They need to do it quickly and easily – with results that are cost effective for their companies, and adhere to relevant policies.” The business case therefore joined traveler experience to company oversight: a faster booking path was useful only if it still supported cost management, approvals and duty-of-care considerations.
What results and other tools CTM reported
CIO’s 2016 profile reported several figures attributed to Clark or CTM. They indicate how the company described progress at the time; the sources do not provide independent validation or a basis for treating them as current performance.

The profile also described Fare Forecaster 2.0, a CTM tool intended to forecast travel and accommodation costs before a booking. Clark discussed automation of booking processes and the use of data before trips to reduce costs and manage traveler risk. Machine learning and artificial intelligence were presented as capabilities CTM was actively developing at the time—not as completed features with measured outcomes.

The CIO50 entry is a snapshot of technology leadership and corporate travel product development in 2016. CTM presented Lightning as a way to bring mobile convenience into a company-controlled booking environment; its reported figures offer context for the company’s rationale and claimed results, but they are company-reported rather than independent benchmarks. The sources do not establish Lightning’s current status, feature set, availability or pricing, and they do not establish Clark’s employer or role as of 2026.

Nor do these accounts compare CTM head-to-head with other travel-management providers. The recognition is best understood as an account of a specific enterprise technology strategy at that time, not a current product recommendation or evidence of present-day market leadership.
