Africa does not use one continent-wide currency. Countries use their own currencies, while some share a currency within a regional monetary union; cross-border payment systems are a separate matter. To identify money reliably, check the country or union, the three-letter currency code, and the date and type of any exchange rate you plan to use.
Does Africa have a single currency?
No. There is no single currency used across Africa. A secondary currency directory updated 6 August 2026 lists around 42 distinct currencies across the continent’s 54 countries; the African Union has also cited a figure of 42. Treat that as an estimate, not a verified current inventory: countries can share a regional currency, and the cited directory is not a legal-tender authority for every country.
For a specific destination, confirm the currency and its code with the country’s central bank or another authoritative source. A regional currency applies only within its monetary union; it does not make all nearby countries members.
What currency is used in West and Central Africa?
Two separate monetary unions use currencies called the CFA franc. The similar name and shared euro parity do not make them one currency or establish that they are interchangeable in ordinary use.

| Currency | Monetary union and members | Issuer and stated euro parity |
|---|---|---|
| West African CFA franc (XOF) | West African Monetary Union (WAMU): Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo. | The Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) issues the common currency. BCEAO’s rate display for 7 October 2026 showed EUR 655.957 XOF. |
| Central African CFA franc (XAF) | Central African monetary union: Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and Chad. | The Bank of Central African States (BEAC) states a fixed parity of EUR 1 = XAF 655.957 and says it has the exclusive privilege of issuing the union’s legal tender. |
The membership and currency arrangements above are described by BCEAO and BEAC, respectively. The XOF rate shown by BCEAO is a dated rate for that currency, not a rate for Africa as a whole or a guarantee of what a bank, exchange bureau or card provider will offer a customer.
How should you identify a currency?
Use the three-letter code when comparing prices, exchanging money or arranging a transfer. A symbol by itself can be ambiguous: a dollar sign does not necessarily mean US dollars, and “shilling” can refer to more than one national currency. The secondary directory gives examples including XOF, XAF, ZAR for the South African rand, NGN for the Nigerian naira and KES for the Kenyan shilling.
Rank #2
- 10 digit large angled LCD display
- Durable plastic keys
- Functions include: currency conversion functions, automatic tax keys, percent key, backspace key, 3 key independent memory, extra-large plus key, sign change, and automatic power down
- Sleek dark blue design

- Check that the code belongs to the country or monetary union you mean.
- For an exchange rate, note the currency pair, date and whether the figure is a reference, buying or selling rate.
- For a transfer, confirm both the sending and receiving currency codes, plus any conversion or payout conditions.
The directory is useful for orientation, but it is not a substitute for checking current legal-tender details with the relevant issuer.
Has the ECOWAS ECO launched?
Not according to the latest official statement covered here. On 9 September 2026, ECOWAS said the objective of launching the ECO in 2027 remained achievable while member-state convergence and outstanding requirements continued to be assessed. That is a target under review, not confirmation of a launch date or a currency currently available to use.

How do regional payment systems differ from currencies?
A payment or settlement system moves or settles payments; it does not automatically replace the domestic currencies of participating countries. Two regional examples illustrate the distinction.
PAPSS
The African Union describes the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) as centralized financial-market infrastructure for cross-border money flows. It works with central banks and connects participants such as commercial banks, payment service providers and fintech organizations. The AU document reported a snapshot of 8 central banks, 28 commercial banks and 6 switches as of June 2022. Those are historical network figures, not current coverage or proof that a consumer can use PAPSS for a particular transfer.

SADC-RTGS
The Southern African Development Community reported that the Angolan kwanza was formally introduced into SADC-RTGS on 27 July 2026, becoming its second settlement currency. The system had previously settled exclusively in South African rand since 2013. SADC reported 15 participating countries and monthly processing of R250.7 billion at the time of its 2026 announcement. These are system-level figures, not a measure of all African payments or a claim that participating countries share a domestic currency. SADC characterizes settlement through central banks as making payments safer and more secure; that statement applies to its system, not to every payment product.
The cited institutional descriptions do not establish consumer fees, transfer speed, eligibility, provider availability or payout options for either system. Check those details with the banks or payment providers involved before relying on a cross-border route.

Why can exchange rates change so much?
Rates are country- and currency-pair-specific, and a published figure may differ from the price a customer receives after a provider’s spread and fees. The World Bank’s Africa’s Pulse Fall 2025 illustrates how movements can reverse over short periods: it reported that the Ghanaian cedi appreciated by more than 20% year to date during the first eight months of 2025, then weakened 14% between 30 June and 5 September 2025. It also discussed a 16% year-to-date appreciation of the Zambian kwacha in 2025. These are historical observations, not current rankings or predictions.
For the West African CFA franc, BCEAO’s display on 7 October 2026 showed EUR 655.957 XOF and included daily buying and selling references for several other currencies. BEAC separately states the fixed EUR 1 = XAF 655.957 parity for the Central African monetary union. Neither figure means every exchange provider transacts at that amount, and neither implies that other African currencies are fixed to the euro.
What should you check before travel or a transfer?
There is no continent-wide rule for cash access, card acceptance, foreign-currency rules or exchange restrictions in the sources cited here. Check the destination and transaction rather than assuming the same payment method will work everywhere.
Quick Recap
- For travel: verify local currency, cash availability, card acceptance and any foreign-currency or exchange restrictions for the destination and travel dates.
- For an exchange: compare the same currency pair and distinguish the provider’s buy or sell rate from a reference rate; include fees and conversion spreads in the total cost.
- For a transfer: confirm the destination country, receiving currency, payout method, provider coverage, fees and expected timing. A regional settlement system’s existence does not by itself establish consumer access.
- For a currency reference: use a directory to navigate, then confirm codes and legal-tender status with the relevant central bank or an authoritative ISO 4217 source.
