CommSec Review: Scam or Legit Broker?

CommSec is a legitimate ASIC-licensed Australian broker, but scammers impersonate it. Here is how the platform, custody, protection, fees and scam risks compare.

Verdict: CommSec is a legitimate Australian broker, not a scam. It is the online broking arm of Commonwealth Securities Limited, a Commonwealth Bank of Australia subsidiary. The genuine service is an Australian Financial Services Licensee and provides access to markets including the ASX.

That does not mean every website, advertisement, text message or social-media account using the CommSec name is genuine. Scammers regularly impersonate well-known banks and brokers, including by offering fake investment opportunities or asking customers to move money to a supposedly “secure” account.

What is CommSec?

CommSec is an Australian online share-trading and investment platform operated by Commonwealth Securities Limited, commonly abbreviated to CommSec. It is associated with Commonwealth Bank, but CommSec and CBA are not interchangeable legal entities for every product or service.

The broker offers access to Australian securities and, depending on the account and service selected, international shares and other investments. Its product range can include ASX-listed shares, exchange-traded funds, listed investment companies, warrants, options and selected fixed-income products. CommSec Pocket is a separate simplified investing service aimed at smaller, recurring investments and has a more limited investment menu than the main CommSec platform.

How to Day Trade for a Living: A Beginner’s Guide to Trading Tools and Tactics, Money Management, Discipline and Trading Psychology (Stock Market Trading and Investing)
  • As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
  • You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
  • To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.

The important point is to identify the exact legal entity and product you are opening. A genuine CommSec account should be opened through CommSec’s official Australian website or app, not through a link sent by an unsolicited caller or online “investment manager”.

Is CommSec authorised and legitimate?

Commonwealth Securities Limited is an Australian Financial Services Licensee. Its Australian Company Number is 067 254 399 and its Australian Financial Services Licence number is commonly listed as 238814. You can verify the current details on ASIC’s official Professional Registers search rather than relying on a licence number displayed in an email or sales presentation.

CommSec is also a long-established business connected with Commonwealth Bank and is a participant in Australia’s securities-market infrastructure. These are strong indicators that the genuine broker is not a fraudulent operation. They do not remove investment risk, technology risk or the risk of dealing with an impersonator.

How to check that a CommSec contact is genuine

Do not treat a CommSec logo, ABN, AFSL number, caller ID or professional-looking website as proof of authenticity. Clone firms can copy all of those details.

  1. Type commsec.com.au into your browser yourself, or use the official CommSec app downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
  2. Check the spelling of the domain. A website using a lookalike domain, an unusual country-code domain, or a shortened link deserves suspicion.
  3. Search the firm or representative on ASIC’s official register. Match the legal name and contact details, not merely the licence number.
  4. Call CommSec using a number published on its official website, a statement or the back of an eligible card. Do not use the number supplied by the person who contacted you.
  5. Never provide a password, one-time passcode, full card details or remote access to your computer because someone claims to be from CommSec or Commonwealth Bank.

A cold caller promising guaranteed returns, “exclusive” pre-IPO shares, tax-free profits or a rapid recovery from a previous investment is not behaving like a normal execution-only broker. CommSec does not need you to transfer money to a stranger’s personal bank account to buy ordinary investments through the platform.

How customer shares are normally held

Australian-listed shares bought through CommSec are generally held through Australia’s CHESS system when the relevant security and account arrangement qualify. This produces a Holder Identification Number, or HIN, and records the investor as the beneficial holder through the broker’s sponsorship arrangement. Some securities or arrangements may instead be held under a custodian structure.

CHESS registration is different from a government guarantee. It is designed to distinguish client holdings from the broker’s own assets and makes transfers between brokers possible, subject to the applicable rules and account details. It does not stop the share price from falling, protect against a company collapsing, or guarantee that an overseas security will have the same ownership structure.

Cash treatment also depends on the account. A Commonwealth Direct Investment Account, or CDIA, is a bank-account product associated with CommSec for eligible customers; other cash balances, international arrangements and product accounts can have different terms. Read the relevant account disclosure document rather than assuming every dollar shown inside a trading interface has identical bank-deposit protection.

What protection applies if CommSec fails?

Australia does not have a direct equivalent of the UK’s £85,000 Financial Services Compensation Scheme for investment-platform customers. The fact that a broker is ASIC-licensed does not mean the government will reimburse losses from a falling share price or automatically repay all money after a firm failure.

Client-asset rules, CHESS arrangements, custody controls and reconciliation requirements are intended to help return properly recorded investments if a broker becomes insolvent. Australia also has the National Guarantee Fund, but its protection is limited and applies only to specified circumstances under the relevant legislation and market rules. It is not insurance against ordinary investment losses, bad advice or poor performance.

Eligible money held in a qualifying bank deposit may have protection under Australia’s Financial Claims Scheme, currently subject to its own rules and a per-account-holder limit. That protection is not a blanket guarantee for brokerage cash, shares, ETFs or international investments. Check whether a particular balance is a deposit with an authorised deposit-taking institution and whether the account qualifies.

CommSec fees: what to look for

CommSec’s cost depends on the market, order size, product and account type. Australian share orders generally attract brokerage, while international trades can add currency-conversion costs, minimum commissions, market charges and custody or account fees. Options, warrants, managed funds and other products may use different schedules.

Cost area Why it matters
Australian brokerage Usually applies when buying or selling ASX-listed securities. The charge can vary by order value and whether the order is placed online or by phone.
International brokerage May include a minimum commission, a percentage commission and market-specific charges.
Foreign exchange The exchange-rate spread or conversion fee can materially affect small overseas trades and dividend payments.
Data and research Some market-data features or premium services may have separate conditions or charges.
Interest on cash Do not assume that uninvested cash earns the same rate as a savings account.
Phone dealing Orders placed through a representative may cost more than eligible online orders.

Published fee schedules change, so check the current CommSec brokerage and fees page before opening an account. A particularly important comparison is the total cost of a small regular investment: brokerage, bid-offer spread, FX cost and any product-management fee can outweigh a headline “low commission”.

Order execution and trading risks

CommSec is an execution platform, not a guarantee that every order will fill at the displayed price. A market order can execute at several prices when the market is moving. A limit order may never execute, even if the price appears to touch the limit briefly. Trading halts, exchange outages, insufficient liquidity, corporate actions and rejected orders can also affect execution.

International securities introduce additional risks: different market hours, public holidays, currency movements, foreign ownership rules and settlement arrangements. A US-listed share can rise in US dollars while producing a lower Australian-dollar return after currency conversion.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages Disadvantages
Established Australian broker linked to Commonwealth Bank. Brokerage and foreign-exchange costs may not be the cheapest for every investor.
Access to ASX trading and established online-account infrastructure. The main platform can be more complex than a beginner-only app.
CHESS-sponsored holdings are available for eligible ASX investments. CHESS does not apply identically to every product or overseas holding.
Research, market information and several account options. Customer support, verification and transfers may take time during busy periods.
Separate services such as CommSec Pocket support smaller, diversified investments. Simplified products can restrict the available investment range.

Common CommSec scam warning signs

  • An unsolicited WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook or Instagram message claiming to be a CommSec adviser.
  • A promise of guaranteed or unusually high returns.
  • A request to pay an “activation”, “tax”, “withdrawal” or “recovery” fee before receiving money.
  • Instructions to install AnyDesk, TeamViewer or another remote-access program.
  • A login page reached through a sponsored search result or shortened link.
  • Pressure to act immediately or keep the investment confidential from your bank, family or regulator.
  • A request for an SMS verification code or approval of a payment you did not initiate.

If you have shared credentials or sent money, contact Commonwealth Bank or CommSec immediately through an independently verified channel, contact your bank to ask whether the transfer can be stopped, change compromised passwords and report the incident to Scamwatch and the Australian Cyber Security Centre. Preserve messages, payment details, phone numbers and website addresses.

Who might suit CommSec?

CommSec may suit an Australian investor who values a large, established broker, ASX access and integration with familiar Commonwealth Bank services. It can also be reasonable for investors who want a conventional brokerage account rather than a narrowly designed micro-investing app.

It may be less attractive for someone making very small or frequent trades, someone primarily investing overseas, or anyone comparing platforms mainly on the lowest brokerage and FX cost. Compare the full fee schedule and the ownership arrangement for the exact securities you intend to buy.

FAQ

Is CommSec a scam?

The genuine CommSec platform is a legitimate Australian broker operated by Commonwealth Securities Limited. However, scammers can impersonate CommSec with clone websites, fake advisers, social-media profiles and unsolicited investment offers.

Is CommSec regulated by ASIC?

Commonwealth Securities Limited is an Australian Financial Services Licensee. Verify the current legal entity, licence number and contact details on ASIC’s official registers before opening an account or responding to a representative.

Are CommSec investments guaranteed?

No. Shares, ETFs and other investments can lose value. Client-asset and CHESS arrangements are intended to protect ownership records and custody, not to protect against market losses.

Does CommSec use WhatsApp to contact customers?

Treat unsolicited WhatsApp or social-media investment messages claiming to be CommSec as suspicious. Verify any contact by using the official CommSec website or a trusted statement, never the details supplied in the message.

What should I do if I paid a CommSec scammer?

Contact your bank and CommSec immediately using independently verified contact details, ask whether the payment can be recalled, change exposed passwords, preserve evidence and report the scam to Scamwatch and the Australian Cyber Security Centre.

The Bottom Line

CommSec is a legitimate Australian broker, not a scam. Its established business, ASIC licensing and access to Australian market infrastructure support that conclusion. The main issues to assess are brokerage, FX costs, product-specific custody and the absence of a blanket guarantee against investment losses.

The more immediate scam danger is impersonation. Open accounts only through official CommSec channels, verify the legal entity on ASIC’s register and reject unsolicited offers, guaranteed returns, remote-access requests and demands for payment or security codes.
