Trading 212 is generally the better choice for long-term, low-cost investing. It offers commission-free dealing, fractional shares, recurring investments and a relatively low published foreign-exchange fee. Capital.com is the more compelling platform for active traders who want sophisticated charts, technical analysis and access to leveraged CFDs.
That is not a like-for-like comparison. Trading 212 is widely used as an investment platform, while Capital.com is best known for CFDs. A CFD does not give you ownership of the underlying share and can lose money rapidly through leverage, spreads and overnight financing.
For a UK investor deciding where to buy shares or ETFs for an ISA or general investment account, Trading 212 is usually the clearer fit. For someone specifically seeking an active CFD-trading platform, Capital.com has the stronger trading toolkit.

| Fractional shares | Availability depends on the Invest instrument and account | Widely available on eligible instruments |
| Recurring investing | Less central to the platform experience | Pies, AutoInvest and recurring investments |
| Charting and analysis | Strong, with advanced charting and technical tools | More straightforward and app-focused |
| Guaranteed stops | Available for certain CFD trades, subject to conditions and a premium | No equivalent guaranteed-stop feature for ordinary share investing |
| ISA | Availability and features should be checked for the UK account you are opening | Stocks and Shares ISA available to eligible UK customers |
Fees and product availability change, particularly for Capital.com’s Invest service. Before opening an account, check the broker’s UK fee schedule, instrument page and account terms rather than relying on an old comparison table.

The biggest difference: investing or CFD trading?
The first question is not which app has the better interface. It is what are you buying?
When you buy a share through a conventional investment account, you generally own an interest in that company. You may receive dividends and can hold the position without paying daily financing simply because time has passed.
When you trade a CFD, you are entering into a contract based on an underlying price. You do not own the share. The position may be leveraged, and the broker can charge a spread and overnight financing. A small move in the market can therefore have a much larger effect on your account than the same cash investment in a share.
Capital.com’s identity is built around CFDs, even though it also offers an Invest service in some markets. Trading 212’s main appeal is the opposite: simple investment accounts, fractional ownership and automated contributions, with CFDs kept in a separate account.
Practical rule: if your plan is to invest £200 a month into diversified funds or shares for 10 years, compare the Invest or ISA accounts—not the CFD accounts. If you want to speculate on short-term price movements with leverage, you are comparing Capital.com’s core offering with Trading 212’s separate CFD service.
Costs: Trading 212 usually wins for ordinary investing
Trading 212 lists free trading commission and free custody for its Invest, ISA and SIPP accounts. Its published FX fee for investment accounts is 0.15% when a currency conversion is required.
That does not mean every order is costless. A UK share purchase may attract stamp duty, and other markets can impose exchange charges, transaction taxes or regulatory levies. The applicable cost should appear before confirmation on the order-review screen.

Capital.com’s Invest service is generally advertised as commission-free for eligible shares, but commission is only one part of the cost. A foreign share may involve currency conversion, and the relevant FX charge can be more significant than the dealing commission. Its CFD service has a different cost structure:
- the spread between the buy and sell price;
- overnight funding for positions held beyond the daily financing point;
- currency-conversion charges;
- possible guaranteed-stop premiums; and
- any market-specific or corporate-action charges.
For example, a CFD that appears commission-free can still be expensive if you hold it for weeks and pay overnight financing every day. The correct calculation is the total cost of the intended strategy, not the headline dealing commission.
A simple foreign-share comparison
Suppose you invest £1,000 in a US share from a GBP balance and later sell it after the share price has not changed. Trading 212’s published 0.15% FX charge would be roughly £1.50 on the initial conversion and another charge when converting the proceeds back, assuming both conversions are required. The exact result depends on how currencies are held and settled.
With Capital.com, use the current quoted FX rate and the full deal preview. Even a small difference in the conversion rate can outweigh a zero-commission label, especially if you trade foreign shares frequently.
Trading 212’s advantages for investors
Fractional shares and small contributions
Trading 212 allows eligible instruments to be bought in fractions, including by monetary value rather than only by whole-share quantity. That matters when a share costs hundreds or thousands of pounds, or when you want to invest exactly £100 each month.
There is an important catch: fractional holdings generally cannot be transferred to another broker. If you move the account or close it, the fractional part may have to be sold. That can create a tax or timing issue in a general investment account, and it may leave a small cash balance after a transfer.
Pies and AutoInvest
Trading 212’s Pies let you assign target percentages to investments and contribute automatically. A portfolio might contain, for example, 70% in one global ETF, 20% in a bond ETF and 10% in a cash-like allocation. AutoInvest can then direct each monthly contribution according to those percentages.

- Corner Keyboard and Mouse Tray: This typing platform secures under your desk with the 16.8” x 9.8” corner connector plate and included hardware. Tray supports up to 4.4 lbs and weighs 10 lbs. Please be sure your desk can support this combined weight
- Under Desk Clearance: Tray requires 7" of under-desk clearance for the track to fit 90-degree angled corner desks. For non-standard corners, the track could require up to 13" of under-desk clearance
- Deluxe Universal 25” x 10” Tray: Fits most keyboards and mice on the market. The tray slides forward and backward on a 14.25” long and 6.25” wide track. Maximum recommended desktop thickness for the corner connector is 1.4”
- Enhance Posture: Reduce wrist soreness with supportive rubber padding, full side-to-side rotations, tilting capability, and 5” height adjustment. Perfect space-saving typing solution for L-shaped height adjustable desks
- Simple Assembly Process: All mounting hardware and step-by-step instructions are included for fast and easy assembly and installation
This is useful for people who want a repeatable process rather than making several manual orders every payday. It also makes rebalancing easier, although investors should understand what each fund or share contains. A Model Pie or Social Pie is not automatically suitable merely because it is popular or professionally designed.
Multi-currency investing
Trading 212’s Invest account supports holding several currencies, subject to the account’s current terms. Holding dollars before buying a dollar-denominated share can avoid converting the entire trade at the point of purchase. The ISA does not necessarily offer the same currency functionality, so check the account type before assuming it does.
Capital.com’s advantages for active traders
Better charting and technical analysis
Capital.com is designed for users who want to study price movements. Its platform typically provides more extensive charting, indicators, drawing tools, watchlists and market-analysis features than a basic investment app.
That does not make technical analysis more reliable, nor does it turn a CFD into an investment. It does make Capital.com more suitable for a trader who needs to examine several timeframes, set alerts and manage trades from a structured deal ticket.
A broader CFD environment
Capital.com offers access to a large range of CFD markets, which may include shares, indices, commodities, foreign exchange and cryptocurrencies depending on the UK product range and regulatory restrictions. Traders can take long or short positions without owning the underlying asset.
Trading 212 also offers CFDs, but its app-first investing experience can make the Invest and CFD services feel more similar than they really are. Keep the distinction clear: the account type, margin rules, financing charges and risk disclosures are different.

Capital.com can offer standard stop-losses, take-profits and, for eligible CFD positions, guaranteed stops. A guaranteed stop is designed to close at the selected level, but a premium normally applies if it is triggered.

A standard stop is not a guaranteed exit price. If the market gaps through the level, the position can be closed at a worse price. Leverage can magnify that gap into a substantial loss.
Where Trading 212 can be limiting
- Less advanced execution: it is not aimed at traders who require a deep range of order-routing or professional dealing controls.
- Pending-order editing: some orders must be cancelled and replaced rather than edited in place.
- Fractional-share transfers: fractions cannot normally be transferred as ordinary whole shares.
- Pie cash: small residual amounts may remain as uninvested Pie cash until the relevant threshold or next investment event.
- Order execution: a displayed price touching a limit or stop level does not guarantee that an order filled. Liquidity, order size and actual available trades matter.
Where Capital.com can be limiting
- CFD complexity: spreads, leverage, margin and overnight financing make costs harder to predict than a simple share purchase.
- Not a conventional share-dealing replacement: users may open Capital.com expecting to buy shares but accidentally select the CFD product.
- Currency costs: foreign-market exposure can involve FX charges even where the dealing commission is zero.
- Less emphasis on automation: it is not as naturally suited to a set-and-forget monthly portfolio as Trading 212.
- Leverage risk: a stop-loss can fail to protect against all losses during a gap or fast market, and positions can be closed if available margin falls too low.
Which platform is better for different users?
| User or goal | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner buying diversified ETFs | Trading 212 | Simple investing accounts, fractional shares and automated contributions |
| Monthly investing with £25–£500 | Trading 212 | Small-value orders and Pies make regular investing straightforward |
| Frequent US-share investing from GBP | Usually Trading 212 | Its published investment FX fee is relatively low, although the full costs still need checking |
| Technical charting and short-term trading | Capital.com | More trading-focused tools and market coverage |
| Leveraged short positions | Capital.com or a dedicated CFD account | CFDs are central to Capital.com’s platform, but they are high-risk products |
| Tax-efficient long-term investing | Trading 212, subject to eligibility | Its Stocks and Shares ISA is a central product; confirm Capital.com’s current UK ISA availability before comparing |
| Moving holdings to another broker later | Neither automatically | Check transfer rules, especially if using fractional shares or CFDs |
How to choose without making the wrong comparison
- Choose the product first. Select a real investment account if you want to own shares or ETFs. Do not use a CFD account as a substitute.
- List the markets you will actually trade. UK-only investing produces a different cost result from buying US, European or Asian shares.
- Calculate FX costs. Multiply the conversion rate by both the purchase and eventual sale if you expect to convert back to pounds.
- Check tax wrappers. For UK residents, compare ISA availability, transfer rules and annual contribution limits rather than looking only at app features.
- Model the holding period. Include overnight financing for CFDs and account-level charges that apply while a position remains open.
- Review the order preview. Confirm whether the trade is a share, ETF or CFD, and inspect the spread, FX conversion and estimated charges before submitting.
- Read the transfer terms. Fractional holdings may be liquidated, while CFDs cannot be transferred as owned investments.
Safety and protection
UK-regulated firms must follow client-money and client-asset rules, but regulation does not remove investment risk. FSCS protection is not insurance against a share falling in value, a bad CFD trade or an adverse currency move.
Protection depends on the legal entity, account type and what happens to the assets. Before depositing a large balance, identify the UK entity holding your account, where uninvested cash is held and what compensation arrangements apply. This is particularly important where a provider places some cash into money-market funds rather than leaving it as a bank deposit.

Final verdict
Choose Trading 212 if you want to build a long-term portfolio, invest small regular amounts, use fractional shares, automate contributions or keep investment costs low—particularly for foreign shares where its published FX fee is competitive.
Choose Capital.com if your priority is active trading, technical analysis, market alerts and leveraged CFD access. Use it as a trading platform, not as an assumed replacement for a Stocks and Shares ISA or a conventional share-dealing account.
For most UK beginners, Trading 212 is the better default. For an experienced trader who understands margin, spreads and overnight financing, Capital.com may be the better tool. The decisive question is not which brand advertises the lowest commission; it is whether you need an investment account or a leveraged trading account.
FAQ
Is Capital.com or Trading 212 cheaper?
For ordinary investment accounts, Trading 212 will often be cheaper because it publishes free dealing and custody with a 0.15% FX fee for investment-account conversions. Capital.com may also advertise commission-free investing, but its current FX rate and product-specific charges must be checked. For CFDs, compare spreads and overnight financing rather than share-dealing commission.

Can I buy real shares on Capital.com?
Capital.com offers an Invest service in eligible markets and regions, but the available instruments and account features can differ from its CFD service. Confirm that the order ticket says Invest or real share dealing and not CFD before placing an order.
Is Trading 212 safer than Capital.com?
Neither platform is risk-free, and regulation does not protect against normal market losses. Safety depends on the UK legal entity, client-asset arrangements, account type and applicable compensation rules. CFDs also carry additional leverage and margin risks.
Which is better for a Stocks and Shares ISA?
Trading 212 is usually the more natural choice because its Stocks and Shares ISA is central to its investing platform. Capital.com’s UK ISA availability and features should be checked directly before opening an account, as products and eligibility can change.
Which broker is better for CFDs?
Capital.com is generally the stronger choice for CFD trading because CFDs are central to its platform and it offers extensive charting and analysis tools. Trading 212 can also provide CFDs, but neither platform should be used for leveraged trading without understanding margin, spreads, financing and the possibility of rapid losses.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Trading 212 is the better all-round broker for UK long-term investors, especially those making small, regular or foreign-share investments. Capital.com is better for active traders who specifically want a chart-heavy CFD platform. Do not compare a Capital.com CFD with a Trading 212 share purchase: they are different products with different risks, costs and ownership rights.
