Delta is the strongest overall economy-comfort choice for most travelers, American is close behind, and United is less consistent on narrowbody aircraft. But the airline name alone won’t tell you how comfortable a particular flight will be: seat pitch, width, entertainment and power can vary by aircraft and configuration. Check the plane and seat map for your itinerary before paying extra for a seat.
How the three airlines compare
Delta’s overall edge comes from a slightly higher reported average seat pitch, wider seats in some representative layouts and more consistent seatback entertainment, according to Bolt Flight’s 2025 comparison. American is competitive, while United’s narrowbody experience is more variable. These are comparisons of reported averages and example layouts—not promises about an individual flight.
| Comfort factor | Delta | American | United |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reported average pitch | 31.0 in | 30.2 in | 30.1 in |
| Representative 737-800 layout | 31–32 in pitch; 17.3 in seat width | 30 in pitch; 16.6–17.8 in seat width | 30 in pitch; 16.3–17.3 in seat width |
| Representative A321neo layout | 31 in pitch; 18 in seat width | 30 in pitch; 16.6–18.4 in seat width | 30 in pitch; 18.4 in seat width |
| Economy entertainment | Seatback screens on many aircraft; streaming to personal devices is also available | Often streaming to personal devices rather than seatback screens | Seatback screens are inconsistent on narrowbodies; Wi-Fi and USB are common |
| Extra-legroom product | Delta Comfort | Main Cabin Extra | Economy Plus |
Average-pitch figures are reported by Kiplinger in its 2025/2026 travel comparison. The aircraft examples and amenity comparisons are reported by Bolt Flight in 2025. Aircraft type alone does not guarantee a particular seat dimension: layouts and seat models can differ within the same aircraft family.
What the seat measurements mean for comfort
Pitch is a useful first filter, not a legroom guarantee
Seat pitch is the distance between a point on one seat and the same point on the seat in front. It is commonly used as a legroom measure, but it is not the same as the space you can actually use: seat design and the shape of the cabin affect how the space feels. The reported average difference favors Delta, but the figures are close enough that the specific aircraft and seat can matter more to an individual traveler.

Width matters, especially if you need more room across the seat
Width varies across the representative layouts in the comparison. For example, the reported A321neo seat widths range from 16.6 to 18.4 inches for American, while Delta’s example is 18 inches and United’s is 18.4 inches. That does not establish which airline will feel roomiest on your flight: the actual configuration matters, and a range is not a guarantee that a particular seat will have its widest measurement.
Where each airline has an advantage—and a trade-off
Delta: the best all-around starting point
Delta is the clearest first choice if you want a balance of legroom and onboard entertainment. Its reported average pitch is highest in the comparison, and seatback screens are available on many aircraft. Delta’s official Main Cabin information says Delta Studio can be used on a personal device or a seatback screen where available, and that complimentary snacks are offered on flights over 250 miles. “Where available” matters: verify the aircraft if a seatback screen is important to you.

American: a close alternative, with more reliance on your own device
American’s reported average pitch is close to Delta’s, and some layouts use Meridian seats. However, its 737-800 example is denser, with 30 inches of pitch, and economy entertainment is often streamed to personal devices. If you choose American, check whether the flight offers the screen or streaming setup you prefer and whether your device will be charged and ready.
United: potentially roomy on some aircraft, less predictable on narrowbodies
United’s representative A321neo layout has a reported 18.4 inches of seat width, but its average pitch is the lowest of the three by a small margin. Narrowbody amenities and seatback-screen availability are less consistent. United can be a good fit when the specific aircraft and seat work for you; the airline-wide averages alone do not settle the question.

When is an extra-legroom seat worth paying for?
Delta Comfort, American Main Cabin Extra and United Economy Plus are the airlines’ extra-legroom products. Whether one is worth the fare depends on the price offered for your itinerary and how much the specific seat improves your trip. The comparison does not establish a standard upgrade price or a uniform number of extra inches for these products, so assess the seat and price shown during booking rather than assuming one product is always the better deal.
- Compare the upgrade price with the seat’s stated pitch and location on your exact flight.
- Consider how much you value extra room for the flight’s duration and your own comfort needs.
- Check whether the fare you are considering has seat-assignment, baggage or change restrictions that affect the total value.
- Choose based on the seat you can actually select, not only the product name.
Delta’s official onboard page describes Delta Comfort as offering more legroom, expedited boarding, premium snacks and dedicated overhead-bin space. Treat those as product features, not a substitute for checking the seat and fare details presented for your flight.

How to choose the most comfortable seat for your flight
- Check the aircraft in the booking flow. Look for the exact aircraft type listed for each flight, such as a 737-800, A321neo, 787 or A350. A broad label like “737” may not tell you which layout you will get.
- Open the seat map before buying or selecting a seat. Check the seat’s location and the map’s labels for extra-legroom rows, limited-recline seats or other restrictions. The airline’s booking page is the final authority for the seat map and seat assignment shown for your itinerary.
- Compare seat dimensions where they are published. Use pitch as a starting point, then check width and the specific seat model or row if that information is available.
- Check entertainment and power for that aircraft. Decide whether you need a seatback screen or are comfortable streaming on your own device. Confirm the available power options rather than assuming they are identical across the fleet.
- Compare the total cost of the seat and fare. Weigh any extra-legroom charge against the seat benefit and the fare’s baggage, assignment and change rules.
For a more precise comparison, research the aircraft’s specific cabin layout using a seat-map service; Kiplinger recommends checking the layout for the particular plane. Aircraft assignments and amenities can change, so recheck the itinerary before travel.
